Custom Framing information

What is custom framing?

A custom framing job involves designing and assembling frames to fit artwork, photographs, or memorabilia according to a customer's specifications. Custom framers help choose materials, matting, glass, and frame styles to complement and protect the item being framed. They measure, cut, and assemble frames with precision to ensure a high-quality final product. This job often requires knowledge of design, craftsmanship, and attention to detail to enhance the visual appeal and longevity of framed pieces.

What does a custom framer do?

A typical day in Custom Framing involves consulting with customers to select framing materials, measuring and cutting mats and mouldings, assembling frames, and ensuring each piece is properly mounted and finished. You might also handle repairs, prepare orders for pickup, and maintain displays in a retail setting. Collaboration with sales associates and visual merchandisers is often required, especially in larger stores. The role combines hands-on craftsmanship with frequent customer interaction and can be both creatively satisfying and detail-oriented, with a mix of solo and team-based tasks.

What skills and qualifications are needed for custom framing?

To thrive in Custom Framing, you need a keen eye for detail, basic carpentry or woodworking skills, and familiarity with different framing materials and methods, often acquired through on-the-job training or vocational courses. Knowledge of hand and power tools, mat cutters, measuring systems, and sometimes point-of-sale or inventory management software is important. Strong customer service abilities, creativity, and problem-solving skills help custom framers excel in understanding and fulfilling client needs. These traits ensure projects are completed accurately, artistically, and safely while exceeding customer expectations.

How do you become a custom framer?

To become a custom framer, you typically need to gain experience through on-the-job training or apprenticeships, develop skills in measuring, cutting, and assembling frames, and become familiar with framing tools and materials. Some professionals pursue certifications or courses in framing or art handling to improve their skills and credibility. Experience working in a framing shop or related environment is valuable for building expertise in custom framing techniques.

Is custom framing a good career?

Custom framing is a skilled trade that involves creating personalized frames for artwork, photographs, and memorabilia. It requires attention to detail, knowledge of materials and tools, and often involves working in a retail or studio environment. The career can offer steady employment and opportunities for specialization, but income levels vary based on experience and location.
