What is a custom farming?

A custom farming job involves contracting agricultural services, such as planting, harvesting, or spraying, for landowners or farmers who do not have the necessary equipment or labor. Custom farmers use their own machinery and expertise to complete specific farming tasks for a fee. This allows farm owners to save on equipment costs and focus on other aspects of their operation. Custom farming is common in large-scale agriculture where efficiency and specialization are key.

What are the typical daily responsibilities in a custom farming job?

As a custom farming professional, your typical day may include operating tractors, harvesters, and sprayers for various clients, maintaining equipment, and coordinating schedules to meet tight planting or harvest windows. You may also be responsible for monitoring crop health, applying fertilizers or pesticides in line with regulations, and maintaining accurate work records. Collaboration with farm owners or managers is common to ensure client expectations are met. The role often requires flexibility to adapt to weather changes and varying field conditions, making every day unique and challenging.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in custom farming, and why are they important?

To thrive in custom farming, you need expertise in operating and maintaining a variety of agricultural machinery, understanding crop production processes, and a solid background in agronomy or related agricultural fields. Familiarity with GPS-guided equipment, farm management software, and pesticide application certifications are often required. Strong communication, reliability, and problem-solving skills help you navigate the demands of working with multiple clients and adapting to changing conditions. These skills and qualifications ensure efficient farm operations, high-quality service, and strong client relationships in a competitive agricultural market.

How much do custom farmers make?

Custom farmers typically earn between $10,000 and $50,000 annually, depending on the size of the operation, location, and level of experience. They often work seasonally or part-time and may charge per acre or hour for their services.

Job description

Who We Are

We're Crop Management Company — a fourth-generation, family-owned business that's been growing right alongside the San Joaquin Valley for decades. What started with one spray rig and a few acres in Delano has blossomed into a 9,000-acre custom farming operation across five Valley locations, plus a propane business that keeps the whole region running. We're proud of where we've come from, and we're looking for people who show up with humility, work hard, stay self-motivated, roll with whatever the season throws at them, and communicate like they mean it. Sound like you? Let's talk.

The Opportunity

We're on the hunt for an AP/AR Supervisor to take the reins on accounts payable and receivable for our agricultural operations. This isn't a sit-back-and-process-invoices role — you'll own the numbers, lead a team, and be a trusted partner to operations and procurement, all while keeping cash flow healthy through the ups and downs of a seasonal business. If you love bringing order to complexity and building relationships along the way, this is your kind of job.

What You'll Do

Accounts Payable

  • Own the full AP cycle — invoice processing, coding, approvals, and payment execution
  • Manage vendor relationships, including farmers, suppliers, transport providers, and service contractors
  • Ensure timely, accurate payments aligned with contract terms, seasonal cycles, and cash flow needs
  • Reconcile vendor statements and resolve discrepancies quickly

Accounts Receivable

  • Oversee invoicing, billing accuracy, and cash application for customers, distributors, and partners
  • Monitor customer accounts, credit limits, and aging reports
  • Manage collections while maintaining strong customer relationships
  • Drive improvements in DSO and overall cash flow performance

Leadership & Process Improvement

  • Lead the department with hiring, coaching, disciplinary action, and workforce planning
  • Refine policies, procedures, and controls to boost efficiency and accuracy
  • Support month-end and year-end close, audits, and financial reporting
  • Spot opportunities for automation and system improvements, including ERP tools
  • Collaborate with operations, farm management, and procurement to align financial strategy with production goals

What You'll Bring

  • A bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field — strongly preferred
  • 5+ years of progressive AP/AR experience, including supervisory responsibilities
  • Agriculture or agribusiness experience — big plus
  • A sharp eye for AP/AR processes, cash flow, and internal controls
  • Comfort with QuickBooks, Sage, or ERP systems, plus solid Excel skills
  • A great work ethic, a self-starter mindset, and the communication and leadership skills to bring people together

Work Environment

Office-based in Delano, CA, with frequent sitting, walking, and standing, and occasional bending or stooping. Computer-intensive work in an open office setting; ability to lift or move up to 15 lbs.

Our Core Values

We show up with humility, bring a great work ethic, stay self-motivated, adapt to challenges, and communicate openly and often. If that sounds like the kind of team you want to be part of, we'd love to hear from you.
