What is custom fabrication?

A custom fabrication job involves designing, cutting, shaping, and assembling materials—such as metal, plastic, or wood—into specialized parts or products based on a client's specific needs. Fabricators use tools like welders, CNC machines, and hand tools to create unique components for various industries, from automotive to construction. This work requires technical skills, attention to detail, and the ability to interpret blueprints or schematics.

What does a typical day look like for someone working in custom fabrication?

A typical day in Custom Fabrication involves reviewing design specifications or blueprints, selecting proper materials, and using specialized tools or machinery to create custom parts or structures. You may be required to perform quality checks, make adjustments based on client feedback, and collaborate with engineers, designers, or other fabricators throughout the project. The work often involves both independent tasks and teamwork, depending on the size and complexity of the job. Staying organized and maintaining a high attention to detail help ensure projects are completed on time and to the highest standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in custom fabrication, and why are they important?

To excel in Custom Fabrication, you need strong skills in blueprint reading, metalworking, welding, and material selection, often supported by technical training or relevant trade certifications. Familiarity with tools such as CNC machines, CAD software, and various welding equipment is typically required. Detail orientation, problem-solving, and effective collaboration are vital soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure precise, high-quality work that meets client specifications and project deadlines in a demanding, teamwork-driven environment.

Do custom fabricators make a lot of money?

Custom fabricators can earn a wide range of salaries depending on experience, location, and specialization. Entry-level positions may pay modest wages, while experienced fabricators with specialized skills or certifications can earn higher incomes, often supplemented by overtime and project-based work.

How to become a custom fabricator?

To become a custom fabricator, gain experience through vocational training, apprenticeships, or technical education in welding, metalworking, or fabrication. Developing skills with tools like plasma cutters, grinders, and CAD software, along with understanding safety protocols, is essential; obtaining certifications such as AWS welding certification can enhance job prospects.

Job description

Position Summary

Wine Trend Inc. is seeking an experienced Architectural Millwork Drafter / Detailer to support our custom wine‑display projects and assist in developing a new line of Wine Trend storage products. This role goes beyond basic CAD work — we need someone who understands how components are fabricated, assembled, and installed.

You’ll work closely with design, project management, fabrication, and installation teams to turn approved concepts into accurate, fabrication‑ready shop drawings. You’ll also contribute to new product development and prototyping, helping transform ideas into standardized, manufacturable products.

Key Responsibilities

  • Shop & Fabrication Drawings
  • Produce detailed shop and fabrication drawings in AutoCAD.
  • Create plans, elevations, sections, details, and assemblies.
  • Translate approved concepts into fabrication‑ready documents.
  • Detail custom wine displays, wine rooms, lockers, cabinetry, shelving, doors, panels, and specialty components.
  • Define accurate dimensions, tolerances, clearances, connections, and mounting details.
  • Incorporate field measurements and project conditions.
  • Update drawings based on redlines, architect comments, RFIs, and field changes.

Millwork & Multi‑Material Coordination

Coordinate wine‑display and millwork components with:

  • Wood and architectural millwork
  • Metal fabrication
  • Glass and hardware
  • Acrylic racks and shelving
  • Stone and specialty finishes
  • Doors and hardware
  • LED lighting
  • Insulated structures
  • Cooling‑system components
  • Architectural and MEP conditions

Identify conflicts and constructability issues before drawings are released for fabrication.

Required Qualifications

  • Experience in architectural millwork, cabinetry, casework, custom fabrication, store fixtures, or similar technical drafting.
  • Strong AutoCAD skills.
  • Ability to independently produce detailed shop and fabrication drawings.
  • Understanding of millwork construction and fabrication methods.
  • Ability to read architectural and interior‑design construction documents.
  • Strong grasp of dimensions, tolerances, materials, hardware, and assemblies.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to spot constructability issues and propose solutions.
  • Comfortable working with project managers, designers, fabricators, and installers.

  • 3–7+ years of architectural millwork drafting/detailing experience.
