What is a custom designer?

A Custom Designer is a professional who creates unique and personalized designs tailored to a client's specific needs and preferences. This can include designing clothing, interiors, graphics, products, or other items, depending on the designer's area of expertise. Custom Designers work closely with clients to understand their vision and requirements, then use their creativity and technical skills to bring those ideas to life. The process usually involves consultations, sketches or prototypes, and revisions to ensure the final design meets the client's expectations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a custom designer?

To thrive as a Custom Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, creativity, and proficiency in CAD software, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling tools, and sometimes specific industry certifications is typically required. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with clients and teams are important soft skills. These skills are crucial for creating tailor-made solutions that meet client specifications while ensuring feasibility and high-quality outcomes.

How do custom designers typically collaborate with clients and other team members during a project?

Custom Designers often work closely with clients to understand their vision, preferences, and requirements, which involves regular communication and feedback sessions. They also collaborate with other professionals such as project managers, engineers, and fabricators to ensure that designs are practical, feasible, and meet quality standards. Effective teamwork and adaptability are essential, as the design process may require revisions based on client input or technical constraints. Maintaining clear documentation and managing expectations throughout the project helps ensure successful outcomes.

Launch your interior design career with a highly collaborative luxury residential design studio where you'll gain hands-on experience across every phase of the design process—from concept development to final installation. This is an opportunity to work alongside experienced designers while contributing to beautiful, one-of-a-kind homes.

Why You'll Love This Opportunity

  • Work on high-end custom residential projects from initial discovery through installation.
  • Receive mentorship from experienced designers in a boutique studio environment.
  • Develop technical skills in AutoCAD, custom millwork, furniture design, specifications, and presentations.
  • Build relationships with premier vendors, artisans, architects, contractors, and craftspeople.
  • Participate in client presentations, site visits, installations, and professional photo shoots.
  • Gain broad exposure to project management, purchasing, documentation, and luxury furnishings.
  • Work in a creative, collaborative culture where attention to detail and design excellence are valued.

What You'll Do

  • Support designers throughout all phases of luxury residential projects.
  • Create and update furniture plans, elevations, and custom details in AutoCAD.
  • Research and source furnishings, lighting, finishes, fabrics, accessories, and materials.
  • Prepare design presentations, concept boards, and sample packages.
  • Coordinate vendors, pricing, quotes, and product samples.
  • Maintain organized project documentation and digital files.
  • Participate in site visits, quality-control inspections, installations, and client meetings.
  • Help maintain the design library and studio organization.

What We're Looking For

  • 3+ years of experience with a residential interior design studio.
  • Bachelor's degree in Interior Design, Interior Architecture, or Architecture (or equivalent).
  • Strong AutoCAD proficiency and a professional portfolio.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and time-management skills.
  • Passion for luxury residential interiors and exceptional attention to detail.
  • Collaborative attitude with a willingness to learn and support the team.

Preferred Qualifications

  • SketchUp experience.
  • Experience with Design Manager or Studio Designer.
  • Google Workspace proficiency.
  • Knowledge of luxury residential vendors and showrooms.

What Success Looks Like

You are dependable, proactive, organized, and excited to contribute wherever needed. You thrive in a fast-paced creative environment, communicate professionally, manage multiple priorities, and consistently deliver thoughtful, detail-oriented work that elevates each project.
