What is a custom designer?

A Custom Designer is a professional who creates unique and personalized designs tailored to a client's specific needs and preferences. This can include designing clothing, interiors, graphics, products, or other items, depending on the designer's area of expertise. Custom Designers work closely with clients to understand their vision and requirements, then use their creativity and technical skills to bring those ideas to life. The process usually involves consultations, sketches or prototypes, and revisions to ensure the final design meets the client's expectations.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a custom designer?

To thrive as a Custom Designer, you need a strong background in design principles, creativity, and proficiency in CAD software, often supported by a degree in design or a related field. Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, 3D modeling tools, and sometimes specific industry certifications is typically required. Exceptional communication, attention to detail, and the ability to collaborate with clients and teams are important soft skills. These skills are crucial for creating tailor-made solutions that meet client specifications while ensuring feasibility and high-quality outcomes.

How do custom designers typically collaborate with clients and other team members during a project?

Custom Designers often work closely with clients to understand their vision, preferences, and requirements, which involves regular communication and feedback sessions. They also collaborate with other professionals such as project managers, engineers, and fabricators to ensure that designs are practical, feasible, and meet quality standards. Effective teamwork and adaptability are essential, as the design process may require revisions based on client input or technical constraints. Maintaining clear documentation and managing expectations throughout the project helps ensure successful outcomes.

Job description

In-Home Sales Designer
For over 40 years, Closet Factory has been designing, manufacturing, and installing custom cabinetry and organization systems for Bay Area homeowners. From custom closets and home offices to entertainment centers, pantries, garages, wall units, and more, every project is individually designed and custom-built for our clients.
We are looking for motivated, personable, and creative In-Home Sales Designers to join our team.
This is a unique career opportunity that combines sales, design, client consultation, and project management. You'll work directly with homeowners to understand their needs, create thoughtful custom designs, guide them through the purchasing decision, and remain involved with their project from the initial consultation through installation.
What You'll Do
As an In-Home Sales Designer, you'll meet with prospective clients in their homes and manage the client relationship from the initial consultation through the completion of their project.
You'll:
  • Meet with homeowners to understand their needs, priorities, style, and budget
  • Evaluate and accurately measure their space
  • Assess their belongings and determine how the space needs to function
  • Create customized designs tailored to each client and their home
  • Help clients select materials, finishes, colors, hardware, accessories, and other options
  • Present your designs and recommendations
  • Prepare and present proposals and pricing
  • Guide clients through the decision-making process and confidently ask for the sale
  • Coordinate with our internal teams and follow your projects through manufacturing and installation
  • Maintain strong communication with clients throughout their projects
  • Develop relationships, referrals, and your own sources of new business

This is a consultative sales position with a strong creative component. You do not need to be an experienced interior designer. We provide comprehensive training in our products, design process, professional design software, and proven sales approach.
What matters most is your ability to connect with people, listen, solve problems, stay organized, and confidently guide a client from an idea to a completed project.
Why Closet Factory?
For more than four decades, Closet Factory has built a reputation for quality, customization, and exceptional service throughout the Bay Area.
We design, manufacture, and install our projects. Our designers, manufacturing team, and installation crews work together as one organization, and every project is custom manufactured at our San Carlos facility. This gives our designers tremendous flexibility to create solutions tailored to each client's space, needs, and style.
Closet Factory is also proud to partner with Costco Wholesale and Lowe's, connecting their customers and members with our custom cabinetry and organization systems.
What We Offer
  • 100% commission-based compensation with uncapped earning potential
  • Expected annual earnings of $70,000-$150,000+, driven by individual sales performance
  • Company-generated appointments to help you establish and grow your business
  • The opportunity to develop your own clients, referral network, and sources of new business
  • Comprehensive training in design, products, software, and sales
  • Professional design software and sales support
  • Ongoing sales coaching and professional development
  • Flexible work schedule
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • Retirement benefits
  • An established brand with more than 40 years in the Bay Area
  • In-house manufacturing and installation support
  • A collaborative, energetic, team-oriented work environment
Who We're Looking For
Our most successful In-Home Sales Designers are great with people. They're confident, organized, dependable, creative, entrepreneurial, and motivated to succeed.
Ideal candidates have:
  • 2+ years of sales and/or customer service experience
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Strong listening and presentation skills
  • The confidence to guide clients through a purchasing decision and ask for the sale
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills
  • The ability to manage multiple clients and projects at different stages
  • Strong attention to detail and the ability to accurately measure spaces
  • Comfort using computers and learning new software
  • The motivation to develop referrals, relationships, and new business
  • A strong sense of responsibility, ownership, and follow-through
  • The ability to accept coaching, learn, and continuously improve
  • An eye for design and the ability to visualize possibilities within a space
  • A positive, energetic, and professional attitude

Experience in home improvement, remodeling, furniture, design, project management, or in-home sales is a plus, but not required.
Build Your Career With Closet Factory

At Closet Factory, you'll have the backing of an established brand, comprehensive training, company-generated opportunities, professional design software, ongoing coaching, and an experienced team behind you.
You'll also have the opportunity to build something of your own: a client base, a referral network, a reputation, and a career where your growth and earning potential are driven by your performance.
If you're ready to combine creativity, sales, and entrepreneurship into a rewarding career, we'd like to meet you.
