What is custom automotive fabrication?

Custom automotive fabrication involves designing, building, and modifying vehicle components to meet specific needs or preferences. This process can include creating unique body panels, custom exhaust systems, roll cages, or interior modifications that aren't available from the original manufacturer. Skilled fabricators use specialized tools and materials like metal, fiberglass, and composites to bring custom designs to life. The goal is to enhance performance, appearance, or functionality beyond standard factory options.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in custom automotive fabrication?

To excel in Custom Automotive Fabrication, you need expertise in welding, metalworking, automotive mechanics, and blueprint reading, often supported by vocational training or apprenticeships. Familiarity with tools such as MIG/TIG welders, CNC machines, plasma cutters, and CAD design software is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, problem-solving, and strong communication skills set top fabricators apart. These competencies ensure the safe, precise, and innovative creation or modification of vehicles to meet unique client specifications.

What are some common challenges faced in custom automotive fabrication, and how can they be overcome?

Custom automotive fabrication often involves working with unique designs and materials, which can present challenges such as tight deadlines, unexpected fitment issues, and the need for precise measurements. Overcoming these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication with both clients and team members. Staying organized, keeping up with the latest fabrication techniques, and collaborating closely with other specialists—like engineers, painters, and mechanics—can help ensure high-quality results and client satisfaction.

Job description

Prestige Advanced (PA) and Prestige Specialty Vehicles (PSV) are leaders in advanced vehicle engineering, specialty vehicle manufacturing, concept vehicle development, and custom vehicle integration. We partner with major automotive manufacturers, commercial fleet customers, government agencies, and private clients to build innovative vehicles that solve unique challenges.

We’re looking for an experienced Automotive Technician who takes pride in craftsmanship and wants to build vehicles that few others have the opportunity to work on. If you’re passionate about trucks, Jeeps, off-road vehicles, street rods, muscle cars, customs, and specialty vehicles, you’ll fit right in.

This is not dealership flat-rate work. Every project is different, and every day brings a new challenge.

Position Summary

The Automotive Technician is responsible for the installation, modification, repair, fabrication, and assembly of specialty vehicle systems and aftermarket components. The successful candidate will work closely with engineering, fabrication, and production teams to build one-of-a-kind concept vehicles, specialty fleet vehicles, prototype vehicles, commercial upfits, and premium custom builds.

Primary Responsibilities

  • Install, repair, and modify OEM and aftermarket suspension systems.
  • Install lift kits, leveling kits, lowering kits, long-travel suspension systems, shocks, struts, springs, steering components, and control arms.
  • Perform suspension modifications for off-road, commercial, and specialty vehicle applications.
  • Install performance and aftermarket powertrain components.
  • Install brush guards, grille guards, push bumpers, custom front and rear bumpers, running boards, side steps, rock sliders, roof racks, skid plates, cargo management systems, and recovery equipment.
  • Install lighting systems, winches, electrical accessories, wiring harnesses, and auxiliary power systems.
  • Mount and balance wheels and tires for custom applications.
  • Install towing equipment, hitches, cargo systems, and commercial accessories.
  • Assist with specialty vehicle assembly, prototype development, and concept vehicle builds.
  • Diagnose and repair mechanical systems as required.
  • Read engineering drawings, installation instructions, work orders, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure every vehicle meets PA and PSV quality standards before delivery.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of completed work.
  • Maintain a safe, clean, and organized work area.

Qualifications

  • Minimum five (5) years of professional automotive technician experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience with suspension installation and modification.
  • Strong understanding of steering, braking, drivetrain, axle, and powertrain systems.
  • Experience installing aftermarket accessories and vehicle upfit equipment.
  • Ability to diagnose mechanical issues and recommend effective repair solutions.
  • Experience using automotive diagnostic equipment.
  • Ability to safely operate vehicle lifts and professional shop equipment.
  • Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record.
  • Ability to lift 75 pounds and work in a fast-paced production environment.

Preferred Experience

Experience in one or more of the following is highly desirable:

  • Off-road trucks and SUVs
  • Jeep and overland vehicle builds
  • Commercial vehicle upfitting
  • Specialty fleet vehicles
  • Street rods and hot rods
  • Classic vehicle restoration
  • Performance vehicles
  • Concept vehicles
  • Prototype vehicle assembly
  • Government and emergency vehicle equipment installation
  • Welding and light metal fabrication
  • Electrical troubleshooting
  • Auxiliary lighting systems
  • Air suspension systems
  • Differential and axle upgrades
  • Performance exhaust systems
  • Custom interior installations

What We’re Looking For

The ideal candidate is someone who:

  • Lives and breathes automotive performance, customization, and innovation.
  • Enjoys building vehicles that are unlike anything found in a dealership service bay.
  • Takes pride in precision workmanship and attention to detail.
  • Can work independently while contributing to a collaborative team environment.
  • Is dependable, professional, and committed to delivering exceptional quality.
  • Enjoys solving unique engineering and installation challenges.
  • Wants to continually learn new technologies, products, and installation techniques.

Why Join Prestige Advanced & Prestige Specialty Vehicles?

At PA and PSV, you won’t spend your days performing repetitive maintenance or routine repairs. Instead, you’ll help create vehicles that push the boundaries of innovation—from concept vehicles and OEM development programs to specialty commercial builds, government fleet vehicles, and custom off-road platforms.

Our technicians work alongside experienced engineers, designers, fabricators, and project managers on projects that challenge conventional thinking and showcase true craftsmanship. Every vehicle tells a different story, and every project offers an opportunity to expand your skills.

If you’re looking for a career where your talent, creativity, and passion for automotive excellence can make a real impact, we’d love to meet you.
