A curriculum coordinator is an educational professional whose job is to help teachers develop a better school curriculum. Also known as an instructional developer, their typical job duties include observing and training teachers, ordering new instructional materials, and ensuring the school curriculum meets all state guidelines. Other responsibilities involve meeting with school administrators and assessing students’ grades with the goal of helping the school raise their overall test scores. Some curriculum coordinators specialize in a particular grade level while others specialize in a certain academic subject or area. For example, some work primarily with special education students and their teachers.
| Aspect | Curriculum Coordinator | Curriculum Specialist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Bachelor's degree in education or related field; teaching certification often preferred | Bachelor's or master's degree in education, curriculum development, or related field; teaching certification may be required |
| Work Environment | Schools, school districts, educational organizations | Educational institutions, curriculum development companies, school districts |
| Employer & Industry Usage | Primarily in K-12 education settings | In both K-12 and higher education, often in curriculum development roles |
The main difference is that a Curriculum Coordinator manages and implements curriculum plans within schools or districts, focusing on coordination and administration. A Curriculum Specialist typically develops and refines curriculum content, often providing expertise and training. Both roles require similar educational backgrounds and are vital in educational settings, but their focus areas differ slightly.
