The Opportunity
theSkimm, a part of Everyday Health Consumer, is hiring a Newsletter Editor for the Daily Skimm.
Our team is made up of collaborative, unique, kind, inclusive individuals who bring their best to work every day. As a mission-driven brand, we provide intimacy at scale and have the unique ability to assess what our audience needs to know vs. chasing what every other brand is covering. We have a lot of creative freedom and understanding of our audience, and we work together to deliver practical, accurate, accessible content to help our readers move confidently throughout their day. We create the articles, podcasts, videos, etc. that power our website, newsletters, podcasts, social channels, subscription service/platform, and more.
At the Daily Skimm, we break down the trends, policies, and politics that impact women so that they can navigate their days with confidence. We tell our readers what's going on and why it matters to them, while providing our dedicated audience of millions with reliable, non-partisan analysis and information.
In this role, the Newsletter Editor will help assign and edit stories for our core newsletter product, the Daily Skimm. The Newsletter Editor is a key member of our editorial team and will report to the Senior Editor of the Daily Skimm. You'll play an essential role in our day-to-day newsletter production, and you'll be responsible for pitching and editing stories for the Daily Skimm. The ideal candidate is a seasoned journalist with demonstrated talent in and love of curating, editing, and writing across verticals, including work, care, health, sports, tech, money, and politics. In addition to exceptional editorial and news judgment, you should have a strong understanding of how current events impact women and how women experience them.
The Newsletter Editor will need to be a thoughtful, sharp, and detail-obsessed line editor who deeply understands theSkimm's voice.
This individual must be willing to work a non-traditional schedule, Sunday to Thursday. In addition, this individual may be asked to cover other shifts on the Daily Skimm team as needed.
Key Responsibilities
  • Help direct daily pitch meetings, set assignments for the newsletter, send out lineups, and offer feedback and edits on writers' outlines
  • Continue to shape theSkimm's email value proposition, delivering our reader unique coverage of what's going on in the world and why it matters to her
  • Work closely with the Senior Editor and writers to assign and edit content for the Daily Skimm
  • Confidently make editorial decisions around how we cover stories and how we navigate complex topics, with an eye for precision, nuance, and voice
  • Collaborate with other editorial stakeholders on content planning to ensure a steady flow of content that is a fit for the Daily Skimm
  • Work closely with the Senior Editor to identify modules, utilities, and tools that could serve as extensions of our content, ensuring their implementation, execution, and promotion in the Daily Skimm
  • Regularly use data and audience insights to optimize content formats and distribution, and find opportunities to connect these to existing or new products

Job Qualifications
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • A self-starter who lives and breathes content and is tapped into the conversations women are having online and off
  • 3+ years of digital editing/production experience
  • 2+ years of managing newsletter products and workflows
  • A love of news and of explaining complex stories
  • Sharp news judgment and the ability to curate a newsletter for our target audience
  • Demonstrated experience using audience and performance data to inform editorial strategy
  • A deep interest in and knowledge of our core coverage verticals, including news, health, money, tech, sports, lifestyle, and culture
  • The energy and creativity to bring big ideas and partner across the organization to execute on them
  • Proven ability to work professionally and seamlessly with other departments - sales, product, design, etc. - and find ways to serve the audience while meeting business priorities
  • Strong management skills with both direct and indirect reports and the ability to mobilize peers around shared priorities
  • Strong organizational and problem-solving skills, particularly around project management, time management, and scheduling

The Company provides a range for the base pay. Factors that may be used to determine your actual pay may include your specific job related knowledge, skills, experience and geographic location. The salary compensation for this role is $80,000 to $100,000. Individual pay within the compensation range for this business unit specific role is determined based on a variety of factors including experience, scope of the role, capabilities to perform the role, education and training, as well as business and company performance.
