Description
Under the direction of the Tribal Administrator, the incumbent develops a cultural resource management and preservation outline of the Cocopah history and culture. The Cultural Resource Manager (with approval from the Tribal Council and Tribal Elders) mediates with local officials regarding the protection and Tribal access to the aboriginal lands and natural cultural resources of the Cocopah Tribe.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
โ€ข Responsible for developing a comprehensive program that outlines the Cocopah history and culture, which includes working with the tribal community to develop programs for cultural sustainability.
โ€ข Performs research and identifies Traditional Cultural Places, Sacred Sites, Rock Imagery, Stone Circles, Camp Sites, Historic Architecture, landscapes that figure into the local community traditions, historical items, etc.
โ€ข Attends and/or facilitates meetings with local, state, and federal officials to support the enforcement of federal regulations regarding the stewardship and preservation of natural and cultural resources.
โ€ข Oversees the compilation of data and establishment of geospatial and relational databases for cultural resources.
โ€ข Attends meetings with Tribal Elders.
โ€ข Mediate between local government officials and the Cocopah Tribal government.
โ€ข Travels to sites of cultural and historical significance to observe and research.
โ€ข Prepares and delivers oral and written reports to the Tribal Council, Tribal Elders, and Tribal Administrator on relevant project developments.
โ€ข Locates, maps, and photographs cultural and natural resources.
โ€ข Protects and preserves cultural resources in the field.
โ€ข Measures and surveys the landscape.
โ€ข Attends pertinent trainings.
โ€ข Other duties as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
โ€ข Understanding of all state and federal regulations, including, but not limited to, the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA), including Section 106; the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act (NAGPRA); the Archaeological Resource Protection Act; the National Environmental Protection Act (NEPA), and the American Indian Religious Freedom Act (AIRFA).
โ€ข Strong oral and negotiating skills.
โ€ข Strong report-writing skills.
โ€ข Must be computer literate with knowledge of database development.
โ€ข Ability to perform library research.
โ€ข Ability to speak the Cocopah Language preferred.
โ€ข Knowledge or ability to learn about the Cocopah history, culture, and language.
โ€ข Ability to fly in a helicopter or airplane if needed.
โ€ข Ability to lift and carry heavy objects.
โ€ข Ability to hike and climb to remote outdoor locations. Overnight camping in remote areas is a possibility.
QUALIFICATIONS
โ€ข Must have a valid Arizona driver's license.
โ€ข Must be able to meet car Rental requirements.
โ€ข Testing may be required.
โ€ข Must be able to pass DPS/FBI fingerprint background check.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
โ€ข Bachelor's degree in a related field.
โ€ข 2-year specialized work experience, 4 years in a related field, management, or director position
