What is a CS intern?

CS Interns, or Computer Science Interns, are students or recent graduates who work temporarily at a company to gain practical experience in computer science fields such as software development, IT, data analysis, or cybersecurity. Their responsibilities may include coding, debugging, assisting with projects, and learning from experienced professionals. These internships are typically part-time or full-time and can be paid or unpaid, providing valuable hands-on experience that complements academic learning. CS Internships help students build professional networks, enhance their resumes, and increase their chances of securing a full-time job after graduation.

What types of projects and tasks can a CS intern expect to work on during their internship?

As a Computer Science Intern, you can expect to work on a variety of projects that may include software development, debugging, code reviews, and testing new features. Interns often collaborate with experienced engineers on real-world applications, gaining exposure to the full software development lifecycle. You might also participate in team meetings, contribute to documentation, and present your work to stakeholders. The exact responsibilities can vary depending on the company, but you'll typically be assigned tasks that help build both your technical and professional skills in a supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CS intern, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CS Intern, you need a foundation in computer science principles, programming languages (such as Python, Java, or C++), and problem-solving abilities, typically supported by ongoing or completed coursework in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, software development environments, and sometimes cloud platforms or databases is important. Strong communication, eagerness to learn, and teamwork skills help you adapt quickly and contribute effectively to projects. These skills ensure you can actively participate in development tasks, collaborate with teams, and gain valuable industry experience during your internship.

  • Serve as primary liaison to EY external auditors for database-related matters - coordinating walkthroughs, evidence gathering, and audit scheduling across APJ and AMS time zones.
  • Manage Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) integration for database applications, ensuring proper entitlement ownership and access provisioning/revocation workflows.
  • Author and maintain ITGC compliance language for vendor Statements of Work and manage SRS submissions for database tools.
Team Leadership & People Management
  • Lead a globally distributed team of HP employees and contingent workforce spanning the US, Singapore, and India.
  • Manage performance reviews, compensation/promotion nominations (TCP), and career development.
  • Ensure 24/7 operational coverage through effective shift management and escalation paths globally across AMS and APJ.
  • Develop talent pipelines through intern programs and mentoring.
Vendor & Financial Management
  • Manage the vendor relationship for database operations, including SOW authoring/negotiation, performance oversight, and engagement management.
  • Own GDBA budget - PO creation/approval (HP Ariba), invoice management, cost center tracking, and project DBA pool allocation (~$262K+ annually).
  • Partner with Business Planning (Finance) on FUFD budget flash reporting and cross-charge models.
Strategic & Cross-Functional Collaboration
  • Partner with Microsoft on SQL Server licensing strategy and enterprise agreements.
  • Collaborate with Cybersecurity on database account standards, vulnerability remediation, encryption (TDE), and open share compliance.
  • Support enterprise initiatives including Datadog observability transition, CView/CMDB asset management, and ServiceNow integrations.
Required Qualifications
  • 10+ years in enterprise database administration (Oracle and/or MS SQL Server) with 5+ years in management leading globally distributed teams.
  • Deep technical expertise in Oracle RDBMS, SQL Server, and related technologies (RAC, database HA/DR architecture, Always On, replication, performance tuning, backup/recovery).
  • Proven SOX/ITGC compliance experience - control design, evidence collection, and Big Four audit coordination.
  • Vendor management experience with major IT outsourcing partners, including SOW negotiation and procurement processes.
  • Budget and financial management experience including PO/PR workflows and cost center oversight.
  • Strong understanding of cybersecurity policies as applied to database environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience with cloud database environments (Azure SQL, AWS RDS, Oracle Cloud).
  • Familiarity with Identity Governance and Administration (IGA) platforms (e.g., SailPoint, Saviynt) and automated access provisioning/revocation.
  • Experience with observability/monitoring tools (Datadog, Splunk, OEM, SCOM).
