What does a crypto compliance director do?

A Crypto Compliance Director oversees and manages all aspects of regulatory compliance within a cryptocurrency organization. Their responsibilities include developing compliance policies, ensuring adherence to local and international laws, conducting risk assessments, and leading anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) initiatives. They work closely with legal teams and regulators to ensure that the company’s operations remain lawful and transparent. As the crypto industry rapidly evolves, the Compliance Director must stay updated on shifting regulations to protect the organization from legal and reputational risks.

What are some unique challenges a crypto compliance director faces compared to traditional compliance roles?

A Crypto Compliance Director must navigate rapidly evolving regulations, complex global jurisdictions, and the fast pace of technological innovation in the cryptocurrency space. Unlike traditional finance, crypto compliance often involves implementing robust anti-money laundering (AML) and know-your-customer (KYC) measures for decentralized platforms while keeping up with new regulatory guidance. The role also requires close collaboration with legal, risk, and technology teams to develop proactive compliance frameworks that address novel risks. Adapting quickly to regulatory changes and fostering a strong compliance culture across multidisciplinary teams are essential for success.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a crypto compliance director, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Crypto Compliance Director, you need deep knowledge of financial regulations, anti-money laundering (AML) laws, and digital asset compliance, often supported by a relevant degree and certifications like CAMS or CCEP. Familiarity with blockchain analytics tools, transaction monitoring systems, and regulatory reporting platforms is crucial. Strong leadership, analytical thinking, and clear communication help you interpret regulations, guide teams, and interact with regulators. These skills and qualities are vital to ensuring legal adherence, mitigating risks, and building trust in rapidly evolving crypto environments.

Job description

About Mesh At Mesh, our mission is to enable consumers to pay and be paid with any asset. Today, trillions of dollars in tokenized assets exist but remain largely unusable for everyday commerce. Mesh is bridging this gap by making crypto payments reliable, useful, and ubiquitous. We combine a powerful orchestration engine with a seamless consumer app to unlock liquidity for the world. Backed by leading investors like PayPal Ventures, Paradigm, and Galaxy Ventures, we are building the infrastructure for the next era of the global economy. Join us!

What You’ll Do
  • Own and evolve Mesh’s compliance program across crypto, traditional finance (TradFi), and DeFi-adjacent product lines, ensuring the program scales alongside the business.
  • Analyze existing and proposed legislation, regulatory guidance, and industry practices across multiple jurisdictions, translating them into practical policies and procedures for the business.
  • Serve as a senior advisor to Product and Engineering on the compliance implications of new features, wallet integrations, on‑chain/off‑chain payment flows, and international market expansion.
  • Design and validate control processes for regulatory reporting, transaction monitoring, and licensing obligations across the jurisdictions Mesh operates in.
  • Partner with business unit leaders to respond to inquiries, exams, and reports issued by regulatory agencies or auditors, both domestic and international.
  • Act as a primary point of contact with outside regulators, government officials, banking partners, and senior business unit managers.
  • Lead and mentor compliance team members, building out the function as the company grows.
  • Monitor global regulatory developments affecting crypto, stablecoins, and digital asset payments, and help shape Mesh’s positioning and readiness ahead of new requirements.
  • Chair Mesh’s Compliance Oversight Committee, driving cross‑functional accountability for regulatory risk.
  • Build and maintain a basic compliance risk assessment and testing program, in partnership with the risk management function.
Who You Are
  • BA/BS required; MBA, JD, or professional certification (e.g., CAMS, CRCM) preferred.
  • 10+ years of relevant compliance, legal, or regulatory experience, with meaningful exposure to both crypto/digital assets and traditional financial services (TradFi); DeFi familiarity a strong plus.
  • Direct experience obtaining and maintaining Money Transmitter License (MTL) approvals across U.S. states.
  • Thorough experience with AML/BSA and Code of Ethics programs, sanctions, and licensing frameworks relevant to crypto payments.
  • Excellent problem‑solving, analytical, and written/verbal communication skills, with the ability to translate complex regulatory concepts for technical and non‑technical audiences alike.
  • Ability to handle high‑stakes, ambiguous situations with internal stakeholders and regulators while maintaining a calm, professional approach.
  • Strong track record engaging with senior management, as well as federal, state, and international regulators.
  • Strong interpersonal and influencing skills, with the ability to drive business decisions without direct authority.
  • Preferred: experience building or scaling a compliance function at a high‑growth fintech or crypto company.
  • Preferred: hands‑on understanding of digital asset transaction lifecycles, custody, and settlement.

The compensation range provided may span multiple career levels and will be narrowed during the interview process based on factors including a candidate’s experience, skills, qualifications, and geographic location. For candidates outside of New York or San Francisco, compensation will be adjusted to reflect the applicable market and location‑based pay band. The base salary range listed excludes commission (if applicable), equity, and benefits. The pay range represents the minimum and maximum target for new‑hire compensation. Actual compensation may vary and may be higher or lower depending on individual circumstances.

Pay Range $250,000 — $325,000 USD

Why You’ll Love It Here
  • At Mesh, you’re not stepping into a typical role—you’re joining a rocket ship in mid‑liftoff.
  • You’ll tackle complex, meaningful problems that actually move an industry forward, working alongside a sharp, motivated team that moves quickly, collaborates deeply, and expects everyone to operate with ownership.
  • This is the kind of place where you’ll see your work ship fast, make real impact, and be able to point to something and say, “I built that.”
  • You’ll grow fast, level up your skills, and get a front‑row seat to how a high‑growth company scales from the inside, with competitive comp, solid benefits, and room to stretch your craft all coming standard.
  • If you’re energized by building, learning, and shaping something big—this is where you want it.
In‑Office Expectations

Employees based in our SanFrancisco, NewYork, and Bangalore hubs are expected to work from the office at least 40% of the time (approximately two days per week). This expectation may vary slightly depending on role, team, and business needs. Certain roles that require closer cross‑functional collaboration or operational support may have additional in‑office requirements, which will be discussed during the interview process. Our hybrid approach is designed to balance meaningful in‑person collaboration, team building, and real‑time decision‑making with the flexibility to work remotely. We believe this structure supports strong execution while preserving autonomy and focus time.

How We Care For OurTeam
  • competitive salary and equity that grows as you and the company grow, plus comprehensive health coverage for you and your family.
  • unlimited PTO—and we mean it.
  • We’re invested in your growth with a dedicated budget for courses, conferences, and certifications.
  • Work from wherever you’re most productive with our remote‑friendly approach, and count on having the top‑tier tools and equipment you need to do exceptional work.

Mesh Pay is committed to equal employment opportunities regardless of race, color, genetic information, creed, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, lawful alien status, national origin, age, marital status, non‑job related physical or mental disability, or protected veteran status. Pursuant to the SanFrancisco Fair Chance Ordinance, we will consider for employment qualified applicants with arrest and conviction records.
