What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Cryogenic Engineer Quantum, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cryogenic Engineer Quantum, you need a strong background in physics or engineering, expertise in cryogenics, and typically an advanced degree such as a master's or PhD. Familiarity with dilution refrigerators, vacuum systems, low-temperature measurement instruments, and simulation software is essential, as is knowledge of quantum computing hardware. Excellent problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the reliable operation and development of quantum systems, which rely on precise control at extremely low temperatures.

What is the difference between Cryogenic Engineer Quantum vs Cryogenic Engineer Medical?

AspectCryogenic Engineer QuantumCryogenic Engineer Medical
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Physics, Engineering, or related field; certifications in cryogenicsBachelor's in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering; certifications in cryogenics and medical device safety
Work EnvironmentResearch labs, quantum computing facilities, high-tech industriesHospitals, medical device manufacturing, clinical labs
Industry UsageQuantum computing, advanced research, physics labsMedical devices, cryopreservation, healthcare technology

While both roles involve cryogenic technology and require similar certifications, Cryogenic Engineer Quantum focuses on quantum computing and research environments, whereas Cryogenic Engineer Medical specializes in medical applications like cryopreservation and medical device development. The work settings and industry applications differ, reflecting their distinct focus areas within cryogenics.

What are Cryogenic Engineer Quantum jobs?

Cryogenic Engineer Quantum jobs involve designing, developing, and maintaining extremely low-temperature systems used in quantum computing and related research. These engineers work on cooling technologies that enable quantum devices, such as superconducting qubits, to operate correctly. They collaborate with physicists, hardware developers, and research teams to ensure the reliability and efficiency of cryogenic setups. Their work is crucial to advancing quantum technology and often includes troubleshooting, system optimization, and innovation in refrigeration techniques.

What are some common challenges faced by Cryogenic Engineers working in quantum technology environments?

Cryogenic Engineers in quantum technology often face challenges related to maintaining ultra-low temperatures essential for quantum devices, such as dilution refrigerators operating below 20 millikelvin. Ensuring system stability, minimizing vibrations, and troubleshooting thermal leaks are key aspects of the role. Collaboration with physicists, electrical engineers, and research scientists is frequent, as cryogenic systems are integral to quantum experiments and device performance. Adaptability and keen problem-solving skills are essential to address unexpected system fluctuations or hardware issues that may arise during research or prototyping.

Job description

PsiQuantum'smission is to build the first useful quantum computers-machines capable of delivering the breakthroughs the field has long promised. Since our founding in 2016, our singular focus has been to build and deploy million-qubit, fault-tolerant quantum systems.

Quantum computers harness the laws of quantum mechanics to solve problems that even the most advanced supercomputers or AI systems will never reach. Their impact will span energy, pharmaceuticals, finance, agriculture, transportation, materials, and other foundational industries.

Our architecture and approachisbased on silicon photonics. Byleveragingthe advanced semiconductor manufacturing industry-including partners like GlobalFoundries-we use the same high-volume processes that already produce billions of chips for telecom and consumer electronics. Photonics offers natural advantages for scale: photonsdon'tfeel heat, are immune to electromagnetic interference, and integrate with existing cryogenic cooling and standard fiber-optic infrastructure.

In 2024,PsiQuantumannounced government-funded projects to support the build-out of our first utility-scale quantum computers in Brisbane, Australia, and Chicago, Illinois. These initiatives reflect a growing recognition that quantum computing will be strategically and economically defining-and that now is the time to scale.

PsiQuantumalso develops the algorithms and software needed to make these systems commercially valuable. Our application, software, and industry teams work directly with leading Fortune 500 companies-including Lockheed Martin, Mercedes-Benz, Boehringer Ingelheim, and Mitsubishi Chemical-to prepare quantum solutions for real-world impact.

Quantum computing is not an extension of classical computing. Itrepresentsa fundamental shift-and a path to mastering challenges that cannot besolvedany other way. The potential is enormous, and we have a clearpathto make it real.

Come join us.

Job Summary:

We are seeking a technically adept and hands-on Senior Cryogenic Engineer to lead and supportthe installation, integration, commissioning, and operation of multiple helium cryoplants andassociated cryogenic systems-particularly in support of quantum computing applications. The
ideal candidate will possess a unique combination of strategic program and project managementexpertise, exceptional troubleshooting abilities, and deep technical knowledge in vacuum systemsand helium cryogenics. Proven experience with process instrumentation and control systems isessential. This role requires excellence in both field execution and system-level design leadership.

Responsibilities:

  • Coordinate and supervise the installation, commissioning, and operation of two helium cryoplants and related infrastructure.
  • Optimize helium process and system control strategies.
  • Integrate cryoplants with cryogenic distribution systems and cryostats used in quantum computing environments.
  • Provide expert-level troubleshooting of cryogenic systems, including instrumentation faults, vacuum failures, and control logic anomalies.
  • Lead the commissioning of cryoplants and cryostats, including system calibration, leak checking, and vacuum pumping procedures.
  • Lead and manage operational teams, including training and guiding operators during startup, maintenance, and fault recovery.
  • Develop maintenance strategies for cryoplants and support equipment.
  • Participate in FATs and SATs, and lead the commissioning of process automation and control systems, including sensor validation and PLC tuning.
  • Spearhead the development and review of P&IDs, and participate in operability and HAZOP reviews for safety and performance assurance.
