Cruise Engineer information

What is a cruise engineer?

A Cruise Engineer is responsible for maintaining and repairing the mechanical, electrical, and technical systems onboard a cruise ship. They ensure the vessel's engines, generators, HVAC, and other critical systems function properly for safe and efficient operation. Cruise Engineers work in shifts, conducting inspections, troubleshooting issues, and performing regular maintenance. Their role is essential for passenger safety, environmental compliance, and the overall smooth operation of the ship.

What does a cruise engineer's typical work schedule look like?

Cruise Engineers usually work in shifts to ensure 24/7 monitoring and maintenance of the ship's technical systems while at sea. Depending on the ship and engineering department size, you might follow a rotation schedule (such as 4 hours on/8 hours off) and spend extended periods away from home during cruises. Daily tasks can include scheduled equipment inspections, emergency repairs, coordinating with other engineering staff, and routine documentation. The team operates in a collaborative, fast-paced environment where communication and flexibility are essential, making adaptability to shift work a valuable trait.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cruise engineer?

To thrive as a Cruise Engineer, you need strong knowledge in marine engineering, mechanical systems, and electrical systems, typically supported by a marine engineering degree and relevant maritime certification (such as STCW). Familiarity with engine room management systems, diagnostic tools, and safety protocols is essential, along with licenses such as a Marine Engineer Officer license. Excellent problem-solving skills, teamwork, and the ability to communicate clearly are key soft skills in this role. These qualities are vital to ensure the safety, reliability, and efficient operation of the cruise ship at sea.

Job description

Set the technical direction for how arrivia builds with AI agents, architecting systems and raising the engineering bar across teams.

As a Senior Agentic Software Engineer, you are a product-minded, full-stack engineer who ships faster and smarter with AI coding agents as core development tools. Operating with limited oversight and broad organizational scope, you architect systems, set technical direction, and drive engineering standards across teams.

This role helps shape the technology foundation behind arrivia, a leader in travel loyalty, membership, and cruise solutions, powering travel for millions of members.

You will make high-impact architectural and strategic decisions that shape the platform's foundation, weighing innovation, risk, scalability, and business impact. You lead by example, mentoring engineers across teams and influencing technology investment decisions.

You will shape how the whole organization adopts agentic development, defining the patterns, prompt libraries, and MCP integrations that multiply every engineer's impact, using tools like Claude Code, Cursor, and GitHub Copilot.

What You'll Own

  • Architect the platform: Architect, design, and develop features and services for our travel platform as a technical leader on a full-stack product team.
  • Drive agentic adoption: Standardize agentic coding tools across engineering teams, establishing best practices, prompt libraries, and workflows that amplify productivity org-wide.
  • Set the quality bar: Review and validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, performance, and maintainability, setting the standard across teams.
  • Modernize at scale: Revitalize aging services through refactoring, migration, and cloud-native distributed design.
  • Strategize agentic workflows: Define patterns and platforms that automate testing, documentation, code-review triage, and deployment checks at scale.
  • Architect MCP integrations: Design Model Context Protocol integrations that connect AI agents to internal tools, data, and platform services across the development lifecycle.
  • Lead distributed systems: Lead improvements to development and operations of an increasingly distributed architecture across cloud platforms.
  • Protect member trust: Safeguard the privacy and security of members' sensitive data with our Risk and Security teams.
  • Increase velocity: Introduce processes that help us ship quicker, learn sooner, and isolate impact, and help establish and meet system SLOs.
  • Mentor across teams: Guide engineers on AI-assisted development, prompt engineering, and agentic workflow design.

What You'll Bring

  • 8+ years of full-stack development and architectural experience building web applications and services.
  • Expert proficiency using AI coding agents such as Claude Code, Cursor, or GitHub Copilot in professional workflows.
  • Strong proficiency in two or more of TypeScript/JavaScript, Python, or C#/.NET.
  • Deep experience with modern frontend frameworks such as React, Next.js, Vue, or Angular.
  • A proven track record architecting and delivering cloud-native solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP.
  • Extensive experience with RESTful API design and microservices architecture.
  • Deep understanding of the Model Context Protocol (MCP) and experience architecting MCP server ecosystems.
  • Experience with containerization and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes) and CI/CD pipelines.
  • A track record of leading technical designs, mentoring engineers across teams, and raising engineering maturity.
  • A formal CS degree is a plus, not a requirement. Depth of engineering knowledge matters most.

Benefits & Perks

  • Unlimited PTO
  • Exclusive employee travel rates
  • Travel discounts through arrivia programs
  • Medical, dental, and vision insurance
  • 401(k) with company participation
