Job description

Summary:
The Nurse Practitioner (NP) in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) at Unity and UMMC provides expert clinical care for critically ill patients. The NP will work in collaboration with ICU physicians, Advanced Practice Providers (APPs), nursing staff, and other multidisciplinary team members to deliver comprehensive care. This role focuses on patient assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, and implementation of interventions, along with continuous monitoring of patient progress in a high-acuity environment.
Status: Full Time
Location: Unity; UMMC
Department: ICU
Schedule: Predominantly Weekends
Responsibilities:
  • Patient Care:
    • Perform comprehensive assessments of critically ill patients.
    • Develop, implement, and evaluate individualized care plans in collaboration with the ICU team.
    • Order and interpret diagnostic tests and lab results to formulate and adjust treatment plans.
    • Initiate and manage mechanical ventilation, vasoactive medications, and other ICU therapies.
    • Perform invasive procedures as credentialed (e.g., central line placement, arterial lines, thoracentesis).
    • Monitor and respond to changes in patient condition, adjusting interventions as needed.
    • Coordinate care transitions and discharge planning.
  • Collaboration & Communication:
    • Work in tandem with ICU attending physicians and multidisciplinary teams to ensure continuity of care.
    • Provide updates and education to patients' families regarding treatment plans and progress.
    • Participate in daily rounds, contributing to treatment discussions and care plans.

  • Leadership & Education:
    • Mentor and educate ICU nursing staff, APPs, residents, and medical students.
    • Stay current on evidence-based practices and advances in critical care medicine.
    • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and research projects within the ICU.

  • Documentation & Compliance:
    • Maintain accurate, timely documentation in the electronic medical record (EMR).
    • Ensure adherence to hospital policies, regulatory requirements, and clinical guidelines.

Qualifications:
  • Education: Master's or Doctorate degree in Nursing with a focus on acute or critical care.
  • Licensure/Certification:
    • Active Nurse Practitioner license in the state.
    • Certification in Acute Care (ACNP) or Adult-Gerontology Acute Care (AGACNP).
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Experience:
    • Minimum at least 3 years of ICU experience as an NP preferred. Hospital Medicine experience will be considered.
    • Strong critical thinking, procedural skills, and clinical judgment.
  • Skills:
    • Proficiency in invasive procedures commonly performed in the ICU including Central Venous Catheter and Arterial Catheter placement, Hemodialysis Catheter Placement, Ventilator Management, Thoracentesis, Paracentesis, Lumbar Puncture, Chest Tube placement, and Endotracheal Intubation is a plus.
    • Strong interpersonal communication skills with the ability to collaborate effectively.

  • Primarily weekend shift coverage
