Job description

The Peer Support Specialist on the Mobile Crisis Team (MCT) programs provide immediate and non-clinical support to individuals experiencing acute mental health or substance use crises. Utilizing their lived experience with mental health or substance use challenges, they contribute to the crisis intervention team, offering empathy, understanding, and practical assistance to promote stabilization and recovery. This position includes traveling to our 5 core counties which are Wabash, Kosciusko, Whitley, Marshall, Huntington.

Duties/Responsibilities:ย 

Below are the primary duties and essential functions of an employee in this position. While not all tasks may be performed by every employee in this role, all employees are expected to perform related tasks as needed. These essential functions must be performed with or without reasonable accommodation.ย 

  • Respond to crisis situations in community settings and in homes.ย ย 
  • Provide de-escalation and emotional support to individuals experiencing a crisis.ย ย 
  • Share personal lived experiences to inspire hope and recovery.ย 
  • Assist in de-escalation techniques and crisis intervention strategies. Model coping strategies. ย 
  • Provide insights from a lived experience perspective to enhance the understanding of the crisis team.ย ย 
  • Assist with initial assessment to identify individual needs during a crisis.ย 
  • Advocate for patients and provide guidance and support that is self-driven for an individual to identify their own recovery pathway.ย 
  • Collaborate with the crisis team and individual to set short-term goals.ย 
  • Assist in developing and implementing crisis management plans, safety plans, relapse prevention plans, and coping strategies.ย 
  • Educate overcoming crises, decreasing isolation, and promoting connections with others.ย 
  • Maintain accurate and detailed client progress notes and peer notes, documenting observations, interactions, and any notable incidents. ย 
  • Answer the crisis telephone, providing immediate support and appropriate interventions when necessary.ย 
  • Find, access, and offer community resources to address the diverse needs of individuals in crisis.ย 
  • Communicate with and foster positive working relationships with team members and external community organizations/resources.ย 
  • Attend scheduled team meetings to collaborate with colleagues, discuss individual cases, and contribute to overall program development.ย 
  • Attend weekly peer-to-peer supervision to receive and provide support, share experiences, and engage in professional development.ย 
  • Safely transport individuals to necessary locations as needed.ย 
  • Perform billing tasks as needed, ensuring accurate documentation and compliance with relevant regulations. ย 
  • Work closely with law enforcement, first responders and multidisciplinary teams to ensure effective crisis response and resolution. ย 
  • Provide follow-up support to individuals after a crisis responseย in a timely manner, documenting follow-ups accurately.ย ย 
  • Be willing and flexible to assist CRSS team as needed.ย 
  • ย Other duties as assigned.ย 

Physical Requirements:

  • Occupational Exposure Risk Classification: The normal work routine involves minimal exposure to blood, body fluids or tissues.ย ย 
  • The normal work routine has a minimal ergonomic risk for repetitive motion impairment.ย 
  • The position may require a minimal amount of physical exertion (bending, lifting, twisting) in the work area.ย 
  • ย The position requires the ability to engage with patients who may become violent and to participate in physical patient holds using approved techniques when necessary.ย 

Required Qualifications:ย 

  • Education:ย High School Diploma or GEDย required.ย 
  • Experience:ย Requires one (1) year of experience providing peer support services.ย 
  • Certificate or Professional License:ย 
    • Certified Peer Support Certification (CPSP), Certified Addiction Peer Recovery Coach Certification (CAPRC)or Certified Addiction Recovery Coach (CARC)ย required,ย or credential obtained withinย 90 daysย of hire.ย 
    • CPI (Crisis Prevention Intervention) - certification must be obtained after hire and prior to providing direct patient care. This certification must be maintained and kept current through employment.ย 
    • BLS (Basic Life Support) and First Aid - certification must be obtained after hire and prior to providing direct patient care. This certification must be maintained and kept current through employment.ย 
  • Valid driverโ€™s license and active auto insurance coverage. ย 
  • Reliable vehicle is required for this position.ย 
  • Satisfactory results from criminalย and driving record background checks.ย 
  • ย Must be a minimum of 18 years of age.ย
