Construction Controller

Location: Livermore, CA
Employment Type: Full-Time
Salary: $120,000 - 160,000.00 per year (DOE) + Benefits

About the Role

We are seeking an experienced Construction Controller to lead our accounting and project cost control functions. This is a key leadership position responsible for overseeing all accounting operations while ensuring accurate job costing, financial reporting, budgeting, and project cost management.

The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the construction industry, strong leadership skills, and advanced proficiency with Sage 100 Contractor. This individual will partner with executive leadership, project managers, and field operations to provide timely financial reporting and strategic insight that supports the company's continued growth.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage the Accounting Department, including supervision and development of accounting staff.
  • Oversee all accounting functions, including accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, general ledger, bank reconciliations, and month-end/year-end close.
  • Maintain and administer Sage 100 Contractor, ensuring accurate job costing and financial reporting.
  • Develop and monitor project budgets, forecasts, and cost reports.
  • Analyze project costs and identify budget variances, providing recommendations to improve profitability.
  • Prepare monthly financial statements, WIP (Work-in-Progress) schedules, cash flow forecasts, and executive management reports.
  • Review subcontractor and vendor invoices, purchase orders, and change orders for financial accuracy.
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and applicable tax and regulatory requirements.
  • Coordinate with project managers to monitor project financial performance and profitability.
  • Support annual budgeting, audits, and tax preparation.
  • Develop and improve accounting processes, internal controls, and financial reporting procedures.
  • Serve as a trusted financial advisor to ownership and executive leadership.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Construction Management, or a related field.
  • CPA designation is a plus but not required.

Required Experience

  • Minimum of 7 years of accounting and financial management experience in the construction industry.
  • Minimum of 5 years of hands-on experience with Sage 100 Contractor (required).
  • Strong background in construction job costing, WIP reporting, and project financial management.
  • Experience supervising an accounting team.
  • Thorough understanding of construction contracts, billing, retainage, lien waivers, and change order accounting.

Required Skills

  • Advanced proficiency in Sage 100 Contractor.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles and GAAP.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills.
  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong communication and leadership skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
