Controller – Construction Company 

Position: Controller
Location: Bay Area, California
Industry: Class A General Construction
Employment Type: Full-Time

About Us

We are a growing California-based construction company with annual revenues of approximately $20 million and a strong reputation for delivering high-quality projects safely, on time, and within budget. We are seeking an experienced Controller to lead our accounting and financial operations and provide strategic financial support to executive management.

Position Summary

The Controller will be responsible for overseeing all accounting, financial reporting, purchasing, field reports coordination, job cost accounting, cash flow management, budgeting, and internal controls. This individual will work closely with ownership, project managers, and operations personnel to ensure accurate financial reporting and maximize company profitability.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage all accounting and financial operations of the company
  • Prepare monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements
  • Oversee job cost accounting and project profitability reporting
  • Monitor cash flow, working capital, and banking relationships
  • Manage accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, and general ledger
  • Manage the Purchase Department
  • Coordinate daily field closeout and progress reports
  • Prepare Work-in-Progress (WIP) schedules and construction-specific financial reports
  • Analyze project costs, labor productivity, equipment utilization, and overhead expenses
  • Assist management with budgeting, forecasting, and strategic planning
  • Coordinate annual reviews, audits, tax preparation, and compliance requirements
  • Develop and maintain internal accounting controls and procedures
  • Supervise accounting staff and ensure timely completion of accounting functions
  • Work with project managers to improve cost tracking and financial accountability
  • Support bonding, insurance, and lender reporting requirements

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field
  • Minimum 3 years of experience as a Controller for a construction company
  • Strong knowledge of purchasing, field reports coordination, job costing, WIP reporting, percentage-of-completion accounting, and construction financial statements
  • Experience managing accounting staff
  • Advanced proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent analytical, communication, and organizational skills
  • Experience in using Sage, Raken and other construction related softwares

Preferred

  • Experience with construction ERP/accounting software
  • Experience with multi-project accounting environments
  • Knowledge of prevailing wage and certified payroll requirements
  • Experience with heavy civil, trucking, excavation, grading, paving, or public works projects
