What does a credit reporting manager do?

A Credit Reporting Manager oversees the preparation, accuracy, and delivery of credit reports for an organization. They ensure compliance with regulations, analyze credit data, and manage the team responsible for reporting credit information to bureaus and stakeholders. Their role often involves coordinating with other departments to resolve discrepancies and implement improvements in the credit reporting process. Effective Credit Reporting Managers help minimize credit risk and maintain the organization's financial reputation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a credit reporting manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Credit Reporting Manager, you need a solid background in finance, credit analysis, and data management, often supported by a bachelor's degree in finance, accounting, or a related field. Job Scope

The Credit Manager is responsible for overseeing company-wide credit operations and ensuring effective risk management across the entire customer portfolio. This role evaluates the creditworthiness of new and existing customers by reviewing financial statements, credit reports, trade references, payment histories, industry trends, and economic conditions. The position establishes and maintains appropriate credit limits, conducts periodic reviews of high-exposure accounts, monitors accounts receivable aging and DSO metrics, and identifies deteriorating accounts so timely risk-mitigation actions can be taken. The role maintains and enforces division credit policies and procedures, ensures compliance with regulatory requirements and internal controls, and maintains documentation standards to support audit readiness, including responding to customer requests for lien waivers and releases. It also supervises escalated collection efforts, approves payment plans, settlements, and write-offs, and coordinates recovery actions with Legal when necessary. Working closely with Sales, Legal, and Purchasing, the role balances revenue growth with credit risk, supports contract and security-instrument reviews, and responds to supplier requests for signed credit applications. In addition, the position leads, develops, and supports a team of regional credit managers and support staff by establishing performance metrics, promoting accountability, and fostering a high-performing team environment.

Responsibilities:

  • Evaluate the creditworthiness of new and existing customers using financial statements, credit reports, trade references, and payment histories.

  • Conduct periodic credit reviews of high-exposure accounts and assess changing customer risk profiles.
  • Maintain and enforce division credit policies, procedures, internal controls, and regulatory compliance requirements.
  • Monitor accounts receivable aging, DSO metrics, and overall portfolio health.
  • Identify deteriorating accounts and implement appropriate risk-mitigation and recovery strategies.
  • Oversee escalated collections and approve payment plans, settlements, and write-offs.
  • Manage credit insurance coverage decisions and relationships with credit reporting and collection agencies.
  • Partner with Sales, Legal, and Purchasing to balance revenue growth, contract requirements, security instruments, recovery actions, and supplier credit documentation.
  • Lead, develop, and manage regional credit managers and support staff while establishing performance expectations, accountability standards, and team objectives.
  • Demonstrate strong commitment to safety, quality, environmental awareness, and continuous process improvement
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as assigned
