Position Overview
This is a part-time In-School Suspension (ISS) Assistant position at Jefferson High School for the 2026 2027 school year. The ISS Assistant plays an important role in supporting student success by helping maintain a structured, supervised learning environment for students assigned to the Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) program. The successful candidate will work collaboratively with administrators, teachers, counselors, and support staff to ensure students remain engaged in their academic work while receiving appropriate behavioral support and guidance.
The ideal candidate will possess strong interpersonal skills, the ability to build positive relationships with students, and a commitment to helping students make productive academic and behavioral choices. Candidates should be organized, dependable, and capable of maintaining a calm and professional environment while supervising students.

Position Information
Position Title: In-School Suspension (ISS) Assistant
Location: Jefferson High School
Employment Type: Part-Time School-Year Position
Hours: Up to 29 hours per week; work days are when students are in attendance
Schedule: Generally Monday Thursday, 7:15 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. (hours may vary based on student attendance days and building needs)
Start Date: August 5, 2026
Hourly Rate: Starting at $15.40 per hour
Primary Function
The ISS Assistant supports the operation of Jefferson High School's Positive Alternative to School Suspension (PASS) program. Working under the direction of the ISS Lead and school administrators, the ISS Assistant helps supervise students assigned to PASS, assists with academic accountability, promotes positive behavioral choices, and supports the overall operation of the program. The ISS Assistant may also assist with credit recovery supervision and serve as a building substitute when needed.
Reports To
The ISS Assistant reports directly to the building administrator or their designee and works closely with the ISS Lead and Assistant Principals.
Qualifications
  • Minimum of 48 earned college credit hours or
  • Successful completion of the ParaPro Assessment (candidates may be hired at a lower rate until certification is earned)
  • Must currently hold, or be willing to obtain, an Indiana Substitute Teaching Permit
  • Experience working with adolescents preferred
  • Strong communication, organization, and classroom management skills
  • Ability to build positive relationships with students while maintaining high expectations
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality and professionalism

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Typical duties assigned to the ISS Assistant may include, but are not limited to, the following:
Student Supervision and Support
  • Assist the ISS Lead with supervision of students assigned to the PASS program
  • Supervise students assigned to PASS for full-day or partial-day placements
  • Monitor student behavior and maintain a structured, safe, and productive learning environment
  • Encourage positive decision-making and provide appropriate mentoring regarding academic, attendance, and behavioral choices
  • Assist students with understanding and completing classroom assignments
  • Coordinate student lunch, restroom, and transition procedures as directed

Academic Accountability
  • Assist the ISS Lead with collecting assignments from classroom teachers
  • Coordinate with teachers to obtain and return student work
  • Hold students accountable for completing assigned coursework while in PASS
  • Assist with returning completed assignments to classroom teachers
  • Monitor student academic progress during PASS placements
  • Report student performance, participation, and behavior to Assistant Principals and the ISS Lead

Program Operations
  • Communicate regularly with office staff regarding student assignments to PASS
  • Assist with maintaining records related to student participation and performance
  • Monitor and supervise the PASS room when the ISS Lead is absent or temporarily out of the room
  • Support the Credit Recovery Coordinator through supervision of students participating in credit recovery programming
  • Help ensure consistent implementation of PASS procedures and expectations

Additional Responsibilities
  • Serve as a building substitute teacher when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the building administration
