Job Description:
Examine applicants for driver licenses, permits, and identification cards by verifying identity and eligibility, reviewing required documentation, and applying state and federal laws. Administers vision, knowledge, automobile, motorcycle, and commercial driver license tests; maintains accurate driving records; and authorizes or refuses issuance. Provides customer service, resolves applicant concerns, and supports licensing office operations at locations statewide.

Job Duties:
Interview applicants and review source documents to determine identity, residency, immigration status, physical qualifications, and eligibility for DMV credentials. Examine identification and immigration documents for fraud and verify eligibility through applicable state and national databases. Create, update, and verify driver records while safeguarding personally identifiable information. Administer and evaluate commercial driver license pre-trip, basic control skills, and road tests. Travel to multiple locations to provide driver licensing and testing services. Administer and evaluate automobile road tests, including tests for recalled, inexperienced, or medically restricted drivers. Set up, administer, and evaluate motorcycle skills tests. Authorize or refuse licenses, permits, and identification cards; explain requirements, restrictions, appeals, and testing procedures; and assist with voter registration. Oversee daily office operations, equipment readiness, inventory, supplies, and basic troubleshooting. Train and mentor new employees, review work, provide technical guidance, and participate in special projects. Resolve complaints, de-escalate difficult situations, and address complex customer issues. Set up testing courses and perform required field activities, including working outdoors, entering commercial vehicles, standing for extended periods, and moving equipment weighing up to 50 pounds. Other duties as assigned and within the scope of the classification.
Requirements / Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications: Experience working with the public in a customer service capacity or working with motor vehicle laws.
Other: This position requires travel. As such, the incumbent must be able to present a valid driver's license or another form of reliable transportation. Regular and reliable attendance required.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities:
  • Basic knowledge of traffic laws and safe-driving practices.
  • Ability to learn state and federal driver licensing laws, policies, and procedures.
  • Ability to learn identity-document review, fraud-detection, and licensing eligibility procedures.
  • Basic computer, data-entry, and recordkeeping skills with attention to accuracy.
  • Strong customer-service and verbal communication skills.
