What is creative writing?

Creative writing is a form of writing that goes beyond the bounds of professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature. Instead, it emphasizes narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics. Creative writing includes genres such as fiction, poetry, memoir, and scripts for plays, films, or television. Its main goal is to entertain, provoke thought, or evoke emotions through originality and imagination.

How do creative writers typically collaborate with editors and other team members during the publication process?

Creative writers often work closely with editors, literary agents, and sometimes marketing teams throughout the publication process. After submitting their manuscripts, writers receive feedback and suggested revisions from editors to enhance clarity, tone, or narrative flow. Open communication and flexibility are important, as writers may go through several rounds of edits before final approval. Additionally, writers may participate in meetings or brainstorming sessions to align their work with publication goals or marketing strategies. This collaborative environment helps ensure the final product resonates with the intended audience.

What jobs can I do with a creative writing degree?

A creative writing degree can lead to careers such as novelist, copywriter, content writer, editor, technical writer, or communications specialist. These roles often require strong writing, editing skills, and familiarity with digital tools or publishing platforms. Many positions are available in publishing, advertising, media, and corporate communications.

What are writing jobs that pay well?

High-paying writing jobs include technical writers, copywriters, grant writers, and content strategists, often requiring specialized skills and experience. These roles typically offer higher salaries due to their complexity and demand for expertise, with opportunities in industries like technology, finance, and marketing.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creative Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Writer, you need strong writing skills, a solid grasp of grammar and storytelling techniques, often supported by a degree in English, creative writing, or a related field. Familiarity with word processing software, publishing platforms, and content management systems is typically important. Creativity, resilience to feedback, and effective time management are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for producing compelling content, meeting deadlines, and adapting to the evolving needs of audiences or clients.

Job description

The Church magazines offer editing, writing, and design internships three times a year. We are currently hiring for positions during September-December (Fall). The internship is 40 hours a week for the four-month period. Medical benefits are offered. Position is located at the Church Office Building but may be partially from home, depending on arrangements made with hiring staff at time of hire.

Church employees find joy and satisfaction in using their unique talents and abilities to further the Lord's work. From the IT professional who develops an app that sends the gospel message worldwide, to the facilities manager who maintains our buildings- giving Church members places to worship, teach, learn, and receive sacred ordinances-our employees seek innovative ways to share the gospel of Jesus Christ with the world. They are literally working in His kingdom.
Only members of the Church who are worthy of a temple recommend qualify for employment. Apart from this, the Church is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate in its employment decisions on any basis that would violate U.S. or local law.
Qualified applicants will be considered for employment without regard to race, national origin, color, gender, pregnancy, marital status, age, disability, genetic information, veteran status, or other legally protected categories that apply to the Church. The Church will make reasonable accommodations for qualified individuals with known disabilities.

Applicants for these internships must be currently enrolled as a full-time student in an accredited college or university, or they must have recently finished a degree from an accredited college or university (within one year of beginning their internship). Applicants must also be available for video interviews if they are selected as finalists.

While we are open to all majors, we are particularly looking for those studying communications, public relations, journalism, advertising, design, English, or other related fields. Here are additional things we look for:

  • At least one semester of college-level editing or writing experience, such as for a literary journal, in a writing lab, on a newspaper staff, or as a professor's assistant
  • Strong writing, revising, copyediting, and proofreading skills
  • Sound understanding of Church doctrine, history, organization, and policy
  • The ability to manage many projects simultaneously
  • The ability to give careful attention to detail, sustain concentration for long periods of time, and maintain the highest level of accuracy
  • The ability to work well with people and present an image of professionalism
  • Social media skills

To apply, please submit:
1.    A cover letter
2.    A resume that includes a link to your digital portfolio
3.    Digital portfolios should include:

  • Projects showcasing your design, video production, or writing skills.
  • A 100-word teaser that invites readers to follow a link to explore an article further (any article [for example, a longer article found in this month's Friend])

Writing samples should highlight your ability to write for specific audiences. You might consider writing a new article on a gospel topic that could be published in the publication you're applying for. Editing samples should clearly show your edits (so make sure track changes are on or, if it's a hard copy, that your editing marks are legible).

This internship involves creating content for the Church's digital channels for children and parents, including Instagram, Facebook, and email newsletters. We are looking for someone with an interest and some experience in creating content for social media, someone who can whip up plenty of social media content quickly. Experience in communications, social media marketing, writing, design, or videography and video editing for social media is a must.

The Friend  digital intern should be interested in content creation, have some experience with creative writing and video production, and an interest in helping meet the needs of parents and children worldwide. The intern helps find and edit user generated content; plans and creates posts for social media pages; films and edits videos for social reels; and helps write copy for captions and email newsletter content. Other tasks include assisting with scheduling in a social media management platform, editing and writing magazine articles for children, and helping plan an awareness campaign. The intern participates in all aspects of the publication process, and opportunities for writing for the other Church magazines are also available.
