What is creative writing?

Creative writing is a form of writing that goes beyond the bounds of professional, journalistic, academic, or technical forms of literature. Instead, it emphasizes narrative craft, character development, and the use of literary tropes or with various traditions of poetry and poetics. Creative writing includes genres such as fiction, poetry, memoir, and scripts for plays, films, or television. Its main goal is to entertain, provoke thought, or evoke emotions through originality and imagination.

How do creative writers typically collaborate with editors and other team members during the publication process?

Creative writers often work closely with editors, literary agents, and sometimes marketing teams throughout the publication process. After submitting their manuscripts, writers receive feedback and suggested revisions from editors to enhance clarity, tone, or narrative flow. Open communication and flexibility are important, as writers may go through several rounds of edits before final approval. Additionally, writers may participate in meetings or brainstorming sessions to align their work with publication goals or marketing strategies. This collaborative environment helps ensure the final product resonates with the intended audience.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Creative Writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Writer, you need strong writing skills, a solid grasp of grammar and storytelling techniques, often supported by a degree in English, creative writing, or a related field. Familiarity with word processing software, publishing platforms, and content management systems is typically important. Creativity, resilience to feedback, and effective time management are standout soft skills in this role. These abilities are crucial for producing compelling content, meeting deadlines, and adapting to the evolving needs of audiences or clients.

This role is responsible for shaping how the Alaska Gear Company brand is seen and experienced across every touchpoint from product launches and digital campaigns to field photography, video content, and brand storytelling. You will guide the creative vision behind our marketing initiatives while ensuring every piece of creative work reflects the rugged performance and premium identity of our gear.

Working closely with the Marketing Director and Product Director, the Creative Director will translate business goals into compelling visual narratives while leading a talented team of designers and creators. This role blends leadership, creative direction, and hands-on production to ensure our brand continues to stand out in the outdoor and expedition gear industry.

If youโ€™re passionate about visual storytelling, brand-building, and creating content that captures real adventure, this role offers the opportunity to shape the creative future of a brand built for extreme environments.

Key Responsibilities
  • Set the overall visual direction for campaigns, product launches, and brand initiatives.
  • Lead and manage the Art Director and Graphic Designer, providing guidance and feedback throughout the creative process.
  • Oversee and direct photo and video shoots including concept development, creative direction, and final approvals.
  • Efficiently create inhouse and infield photo and video assets for social media, website, and paid media campaigns.
  • Review and approve final creative across digital, social, web, print, and event marketing materials.
  • Maintain and evolve brand standards, visual guidelines, and creative consistency across all channels.
  • Partner with the Marketing Director and Product Director to ensure creative work supports business and product goals.
  • Provide feedback, refine concepts, and ensure all creative work meets brand quality standards.
  • Identify opportunities to elevate brand storytelling and visual impact across campaigns and marketing initiatives.
  • Required Skills and Experience
  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in Marketing, Business, Design, or related field.
  • Ten years of relevant experience, including seven or more years as a Creative Director in an agency or corporate environment.
  • Proven experience leading creative teams and managing largescale campaigns or brand initiatives.
  • Deep understanding of design tools, digital technologies, and current creative trends.
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating brandbuilding, advertising, and visual storytelling expertise.
  • Ability to work crossfunctionally with marketing, product, and leadership teams to align creative with strategy.
  • Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive salary based on experience
  • Comprehensive medical, dental, vision, and life insurance coverage
  • Flexible Paid Time Off (after 90 days)
  • Holiday pay
  • 401(k)
  • Generous employee discounts and complimentary gear rentals
  • A collaborative, outdoorfocused team culture
  • Why Work at Alaska Gear Company?

At Alaska Gear Company, we build equipment designed to perform where failure isnโ€™t an option, from arctic expeditions to remote backcountry travel. Just as important as building exceptional gear is shaping the visual identity and storytelling that brings those products, and the adventures behind them, to life.

Our creative team is responsible for capturing the spirit of exploration that defines our brand. Through photography, film, design, and immersive storytelling, we translate real-world field experiences into powerful visual narratives that resonate with the people who rely on our gear.

Joining Alaska Gear Company means helping define the creative voice of a brand built for extreme environments while working alongside a team that believes great design, authentic storytelling, and real adventure should always go hand in hand.
