A Creative Writing MFA job typically refers to careers pursued by graduates of a Master of Fine Arts (MFA) program in creative writing. Common roles include writing and publishing fiction, nonfiction, or poetry, as well as teaching creative writing at the college level. Graduates may also work in editing, content creation, copywriting, or communications. The degree provides strong storytelling and critical thinking skills, which can be applied to various professional fields.
An MFA in Creative Writing can prepare you for a wide range of careers beyond traditional authorship, including roles in teaching at the college level, content creation, editing, publishing, or communications. Many MFA graduates work as freelance writers, editors, or in media positions where strong narrative and analytical skills are highly valued. In academia, opportunities may include teaching creative writing, leading workshops, or participating in literary research. Career advancement often depends on building a strong publication history, networking within the writing community, and staying current with industry trends. Creative Writing MFA holders often find fulfillment in roles that combine creativity with critical engagement, both independently and as part of collaborative teams.
To thrive as a Creative Writing MFA graduate, you need exceptional writing, storytelling, and critical analysis skills, typically demonstrated through a portfolio and an advanced degree (MFA) in Creative Writing. Mastery of creative software like Microsoft Word, Scrivener, and online publishing platforms, along with familiarity with editorial guidelines, is often necessary. Strong communication, openness to feedback, and time management are important soft skills that elevate success in writing collaborations and workshop environments. These skills enable individuals to produce original work, meet publication standards, and grow professionally in literary, academic, or media settings.

JOB PURPOSE:
The English Department at the University of Wyoming invites applications for a tenure-stream assistant professor in Creative Writing specializing in creative non-fiction. This is a nine-month fully benefited position where the successful candidate will be expected to pursue an active publication agenda and teach courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels, including in the BA concentration in Creative Writing and the MFA program. We especially seek candidates with secondary expertise in one or more of the following areas: environmental writing, magazine writing, hybrid forms, fiction, poetry, and the public humanities. Our interdisciplinary writing community extends beyond the classroom, and our faculty are expected to participate fully in the life of our program and department, serve on our MFA admissions committee, and regularly advise graduate theses. Candidates with interest in program administration, in building remote completion options for a BA in Creative Writing, and in exploring models for a low-residency online MFA are encouraged to apply. We're housed within the English Department in the University's College of Arts and Sciences. The department is home to internationally recognized scholars, writers and teachers and offers both an undergraduate major and additional minors in professional writing and literary studies. In addition to the MFA in Creative Writing, the department offers three MA tracks in literature; rhetoric and writing studies; and public humanities. The department also has a four-year fully funded PhD in Public Humanities that consistently recruits students with MFA degrees and welcomes creative or creative-critical dissertation projects.

The typical tenure-track teaching load is five courses per academic year with opportunities for one course release for frequent publication/creative activity or taking on other kinds of significant departmental service and leadership.
SUPPLEMENTAL FUNCTIONS:
Other duties entail supporting both the MFA and undergraduate program by serving on our MFA admissions committee, regularly directing graduate theses, and participating in event programming and ongoing curricular development. The successful candidate can expect to be actively involved in service related to the expansion of our MFA program, the development of online options for the undergraduate concentration in Creative Writing, and PhD in Public Humanities, and the department's evolving public humanities initiatives.
