What is nonfiction writing?

Nonfiction writing refers to content that is based on real events, facts, and actual people, rather than imaginary stories. It includes genres such as biographies, essays, journalism, memoirs, and instructional texts. Nonfiction writers aim to inform, explain, or persuade readers about real-world topics, often requiring research and fact-checking to ensure accuracy. This form of writing can be found in books, magazines, newspapers, and digital media.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a nonfiction writer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Nonfiction Writer, you need strong research skills, clear and engaging writing abilities, and a firm grasp of grammar and structure, often supported by a degree in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with word processing software, citation tools, and publishing platforms is typically required. Curiosity, attention to detail, and the ability to meet deadlines are essential soft skills that help writers produce accurate and compelling content. These skills are crucial for ensuring credibility, engaging readers, and maintaining professionalism in a competitive field.

What are some common challenges nonfiction writers face when working on long-form projects, and how can they overcome them?

Nonfiction writers often encounter challenges such as maintaining narrative cohesion, ensuring factual accuracy, and managing large volumes of research. Staying organized with detailed outlines and research databases can help keep information accessible and structured. Regular feedback from editors or peer writers also helps refine the manuscript and catch inconsistencies. Additionally, setting realistic deadlines and breaking the project into manageable milestones can prevent overwhelm and keep the writing process on track.

Job description

Description
UW Continuum College expands the reach of the University of Washington by delivering educational programs that meet the needs of learners at all phases of their lives. We're focused on removing obstacles to relevant educational opportunities by addressing geographic, financial, length of commitment, and time constraints, increasing access to knowledge for more people. By looking ahead and experimenting with new approaches, we're creating new educational opportunities to help people thrive in a world of change.
UW Continuum College (UWC2) has an outstanding opportunity for a part-time course developer for the new Professional & Continuing Education (PCE) Creative Nonfiction non-credit course.
Part-time course developers provide subject matter expertise and create/revise content for new or existing non-credit programs. The Course Developer works with an instructional designer, program manager, and video production specialist to create content that is relevant to adult learners seeking to expand skills and accelerate their careers. In some cases, the developer will create a curriculum map, which provides a high-level outline of the program. In other cases, a curriculum map will already be in place and the role is focused on building the content of each lesson.
The pay range for these positions is $45-55 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Length of assignments and shifts vary depending on specific staffing needs of individual courses and programs.
Course Developers may do some, or all, of the following...
  • Collaborate with the design team and other subject matter experts, to create high-quality course curriculum that aligns with the intended format of the course. Content includes:
    • Readings and external resources
    • Assessments (quizzes, knowledge checks, exams, projects)

    • Slide Presentations with notes
  • Scripts and Video and/or audio recording
  • Collaborate with the design team and other content developers, contribute to the creation of teaching notes to help orient future instructors to the content.
  • Collaborate with UWC2 staff to ensure course materials meet University accessibility requirements and standards.
  • Complete all deliverables on time as outlined in the contract and statement of work
  • Respond to feedback from UWC² staff and other instructors or advisory board members
  • Participate in an initial project kick-off and/or scoping meeting
  • Participate in check-in meetings as needed (may be in-person or virtual)
  • Complete relevant learning technology training, and other training as needed or required.

Most course development projects take place over a six-month period. Information on Continuum College non-credit programs may be found at https://www.pce.uw.edu/program-finder.
UWC2 Extension Lecturers / Course Developers are Academic Staff, not faculty. These are part-time, temporary positions.
