What is a creative writing internship?

A Creative Writing Internship is a temporary position where individuals, often students or recent graduates, gain practical experience in writing original content for various mediums such as blogs, magazines, advertising, or publishing companies. Interns work under the guidance of professional writers or editors to develop their storytelling, editing, and communication skills. These internships can provide valuable portfolio pieces and networking opportunities, helping interns build a foundation for a career in writing or related fields.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative writing intern?

To thrive as a Creative Writing Intern, you need strong writing skills, a solid grasp of grammar and storytelling techniques, and often an academic background in English, journalism, or related fields. Familiarity with content management systems, word processing tools, and digital publishing platforms is typically expected. Creativity, openness to feedback, and effective communication are crucial soft skills that help interns excel in collaborative and deadline-driven environments. These abilities ensure that interns can produce engaging content, adapt to editorial standards, and contribute positively to creative teams.

How does a creative writing intern typically collaborate with editors and other team members during their internship?

Creative Writing Interns often work closely with editors, fellow writers, and content strategists to brainstorm ideas, refine drafts, and ensure their writing aligns with the publication's voice and goals. Regular feedback sessions and editorial meetings are common, providing opportunities for interns to learn and grow. Interns may also participate in peer reviews and contribute to team projects, gaining valuable experience in constructive collaboration and the editorial workflow.

What is the difference between Creative Writing Internship vs Content Writing Internship?

Required SkillsCreative storytelling, originality, literary skillsSEO, research, clarity, audience engagement
Work EnvironmentPublishing houses, media companies, advertising agenciesDigital marketing firms, online media, corporate blogs

While both internships involve writing, a Creative Writing Internship focuses on storytelling, literary skills, and creative expression, often in publishing or media settings. In contrast, a Content Writing Internship emphasizes SEO, audience engagement, and research, primarily for digital platforms. Understanding these differences helps applicants choose the right path based on their skills and career goals.

Job description

BGBx

Fall 2026 Copy Internship (For Academic Credit)

Position Overview

Do you have a passion for creativity, blended with smart science?ย  Are you looking for a gateway to a career in advertising?ย

Science has proven that humans are far more engaged by storytelling than by cold, hard facts. Yet cold, hard facts are the stuff of which science and medicine are made of. How do we use storytelling to help customers form a personal connection to the facts we need to communicate?ย  If you can do that, you might rule the world. Or at least promotional healthcare copywriting.

BGB Group is hiring a Copy Intern for the Fall 2026 semester.ย During this program, you will immerse in the day-to-day life of a writer/content provider focused on healthcare clients. Through classes and in collaboration with staff and interns from other disciplines, you will produce a project from kick-off to going live, providing valuable content while learning how the sausage gets made and how every project goes from idea to finished product. You will also work on a variety of other copy projects as necessitated by the Agency's deliverables. You will gain research and presentation skills. By the time our experience together wraps, you will 1) know if a career as a healthcare advertising copywriter is for you, and 2) have acquired valuable experience that will make you a more attractive candidate when you go looking for that first full-time job.

This internship is for academic credit only and will run from September-December 2026.

Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of a mentor/manager, the Copy Intern will shadow our Copy team and support a breadth of initiatives.ย  Projects will vary and may include:

  • Collaborating with Account Intern and Art Intern
  • Creative concepting for brand campaigns or programs
  • Design and execution of materials across channels
  • Tactical brainstorming
  • Assistance on active projects in development
  • Shadowing Copy team members to learn about creative/project briefs and timelines
  • Presentation of creative ideas to the internal team
  • Intern team assignments as well as an independent study project and final presentation

Preferred Qualifications

  • Will be graduating in 2027 or 2028 with a Bachelor's or Master's degree in a writing-focused discipline such as English, Creative Writing, Journalism, Literature, Marketing, Advertising
  • A strong career interest in healthcare communications, advertising, life sciences, and medicine
  • Is a self-starter who takes initiative and thinks quickly on his or her feet
  • Enjoys interacting with people and has a track record of working successfully in a team-based environment
  • Makes up for any lack of experience with enthusiasm and a strong work ethic
  • Has a portfolio of writing samples ready for review
