What is a creative project manager?

A creative project manager oversees all the elements of a creative project. These creative projects usually fall under the marketing department, but there are opportunities in other sections of a company. As a creative project manager, your job duties are to shape the ideas of the project, define clear goals and objectives in consultation with other departments, organize your team, and keep them on task. The creative project manager needs to maintain a balance between allowing the creative talent freedom to explore ideas while still making sure the team meets deadlines and creates a strong project, so you need excellent interpersonal and negotiations skills for this career.

How does a creative project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Creative Project Manager serves as a bridge between creative teams, such as designers and copywriters, and other departments like marketing, product, and client services. They facilitate communication by clearly outlining project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring everyone is aligned. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative meetings are common, allowing the manager to address any blockers quickly and keep the project on track. This collaborative structure fosters a dynamic environment where feedback and ideas flow openly, ensuring that creative outputs meet both strategic objectives and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Project Manager, you need strong project management abilities, experience in creative industries, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Wrike, and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage client expectations effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality creative projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong team collaboration.

Job description

About CVM Electric

CVM Electric is a fourth-generation, family-owned electrical contracting firm serving the Western New York region since 1919, delivering commercial, industrial, and residential electrical solutions across the full spectrum of construction and service work. We’re looking for an experienced Project Manager to take ownership of our projects from planning through closeout, someone who can lead in the field and in the office alike.

The Role

The Project Manager is the central point of accountability for bringing CVM Electric’s projects in on time, within budget, with quality workmanship, and in a way that meets customer expectations. The Project Manager also manages and resolves conflicts that arise on projects and works to ensure a productive and safe work environment for the project team. This role divides time between the office and active job sites and requires an electrical background, strong leadership skills, and the ability to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.

What You’ll Do

  • Own project execution end-to-end, bringing jobs in on time, within budget, and to CVM’s quality standards
  • Establish project objectives, procedures, and performance standards, and accurately forecast project costs, expenses, and resource utilization
  • Schedule and sequence construction activities, including labor, materials, equipment, and subcontractors
  • Manage and direct subcontractors and material procurement
  • Handle day-to-day project administration, including RFIs, submittals, contracts, and change orders, and generate change order estimates using software
  • Perform project closeout and cost reconciliation
  • Serve as the client’s main point of contact for the duration of the project and lead periodic project meetings, both internally and with the customer
  • Keep CVM team members aligned and informed on project status, collaborating with other offices and divisions to achieve project deliverables
  • Manage and resolve conflicts that arise on projects, and ensure a productive and safe work environment for the project team
  • Coach and support project team members, and drive continuous improvement by embracing lessons learned and new technology

What We’re Looking For

  • 5+ years of electrical background, plus 3+ years of project management, estimating, and cost control experience
  • Demonstrated understanding of civil, architectural, mechanical, and general construction techniques
  • Proficient with computerized project management, estimating, and scheduling software
  • Excellent interpersonal, conflict-resolution, and communication skills, with strong planning, leadership, and team-building ability
  • Extensive knowledge of safety protocols and procedures
  • Ability to prioritize and manage multiple, changing priorities under time pressure with a positive attitude
  • Valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record
  • Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Construction Management, Electrical Engineering, or a related field a plus, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Initiative-taking, proactive, and an effective collaborator a plus

Why CVM

We take care of the people who keep that legacy going. We offer a comprehensive benefits package including health and dental insurance, paid time off that grows with your tenure, paid holidays, 401(k), and a profit-sharing program. Field team members also earn a tool and boot allowance. This is a company where your experience is respected, your growth is supported, and long-term careers are the norm.

Compensation: $80,000 - $110,000 annually (exempt)

CVM Electric is an Equal Opportunity Employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, national origin, disability, or veteran status.
