What is a creative project manager?

A creative project manager oversees all the elements of a creative project. These creative projects usually fall under the marketing department, but there are opportunities in other sections of a company. As a creative project manager, your job duties are to shape the ideas of the project, define clear goals and objectives in consultation with other departments, organize your team, and keep them on task. The creative project manager needs to maintain a balance between allowing the creative talent freedom to explore ideas while still making sure the team meets deadlines and creates a strong project, so you need excellent interpersonal and negotiations skills for this career.

How does a creative project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Creative Project Manager serves as a bridge between creative teams, such as designers and copywriters, and other departments like marketing, product, and client services. They facilitate communication by clearly outlining project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring everyone is aligned. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative meetings are common, allowing the manager to address any blockers quickly and keep the project on track. This collaborative structure fosters a dynamic environment where feedback and ideas flow openly, ensuring that creative outputs meet both strategic objectives and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Project Manager, you need strong project management abilities, experience in creative industries, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Wrike, and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage client expectations effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality creative projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong team collaboration.

Job description

Summary

Topstep is looking for a Project Manager for Creative & Evergreen Marketing to keep our Creative and always-on marketing work moving from brief to launch. Reporting to the Director of Operations for Brand & Marketing, this role is the connective tissue between Creative, Growth, Product, Data, and Legal/Compliance, turning priorities into clear plans, keeping schedules on track, and making sure every deliverable is reviewed, compliant, and shipped on time. You will split your focus between managing the intake and delivery of creative requests and owning end-to-end project plans for our Evergreen marketing initiatives. The role exists to give the team visibility, accountability, and predictable delivery so creative and marketing can do their best work in support of Topstep's traders. Success looks like well-run projects, aligned stakeholders, and blockers removed before they become problems.

Key ResponsibilitiesCreative
  • Project Planning & Execution: Partner with Creative leadership to scope, prioritize, and manage requests. Maintain detailed project schedules to ensure visibility, accountability, and on-time delivery across all creative disciplines.
  • Quality & Compliance Oversight: Ensure all deliverables are routed to the appropriate reviewers, including Creative leadership and legal, to uphold quality standards and compliance requirements.
  • Resource Management: Anticipate bandwidth constraints, propose solutions, and escalate resourcing needs when necessary. Proactively mitigate project risks, including scope creep, shifting priorities, and conflicting resource allocation.
  • Stakeholder Communication: Serve as the primary point of contact for internal stakeholders regarding project timelines and status updates.
  • Team Coordination: Organize recurring and ad-hoc meetings for project kickoffs, cross-functional collaboration, and ongoing updates.
  • Process Improvement: Collaborate with Senior Management to optimize workflows, elevate project management practices, and implement Creative team best practices.
Evergreen Marketing
  • Own end-to-end GTM/project plans for Evergreen marketing initiatives (brief, timeline, channel plans, progress tracking).
  • Build and maintain project schedules and status reporting (weekly updates, Marketing channel logs).
  • Coordinate stakeholder alignment and approvals (Creative, Growth, Product, Data, Legal/Compliance as needed).
  • Manage asset trafficking: intake, briefs, reviews, version control, and final handoff to channel owners.
  • Ensure campaign readiness: QA checklists, tracking launch comms, and post-launch monitoring.
  • Run recurring stand-ups and status meetings and document decisions/action items in Notion.
  • Maintain campaign documentation (requirements, meeting notes, links to decks, creative, tracking dashboards).
  • Identify risks early and drive mitigation/escalation; remove blockers for owners.
Required Qualifications and Key Competencies
  • 3 + years of project or program management experience, ideally supporting creative, brand, or marketing teams.
  • Proven ability to manage multiple concurrent projects, timelines, and stakeholders without losing detail or momentum.
  • Strong working knowledge of project management and collaboration tools (e.g., Notion, Asana, Jira, or similar), with experience maintaining schedules, status reports, and documentation.
  • Experience managing creative and/or marketing workflows, including intake, briefs, reviews, version control, and asset handoff.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; able to serve as the primary point of contact and translate between creative, technical, and business stakeholders.
  • Comfort partnering with Legal/Compliance to route deliverables for review and uphold quality and compliance standards.
  • Strong risk management instincts: able to anticipate bandwidth constraints, spot scope creep early, and drive mitigation and escalation.
  • Highly organized and proactive, with a bias toward removing blockers and keeping owners moving.
  • This is an individual contributor role focused on hands-on project execution, cross-functional coordination, and accountability for personal deliverables. It does not include direct people leadership responsibilities, though the role works closely with Senior Management and Creative leadership to elevate team practices.
Company Culture & Perks
  • Topstep is an engaging working environment which ranges from fully remote to hybrid. We foster a culture of collaboration with cameras on during meetings and a robust Slack environment for communication.
  • Seven Company-paid Holidays and generous Family Leave. Paid time off is front-loaded.

  • Vacations are encouraged with a bonus for taking 5 consecutive days. Employee referrals are bonused. Topstep offers a food and groceries budget and contributes towards health and wellness.

  • $85,000 - $100,000 annually.
  • Bonus: This position is eligible for a performance-based bonus as provided by the plan terms and governing documents.
  • The compensation offered will take into account internal compensation structure and may vary depending on the candidate's geographic region, job-related knowledge, skills, and experience among other factors.
