What is a creative project manager?

A creative project manager oversees all the elements of a creative project. These creative projects usually fall under the marketing department, but there are opportunities in other sections of a company. As a creative project manager, your job duties are to shape the ideas of the project, define clear goals and objectives in consultation with other departments, organize your team, and keep them on task. The creative project manager needs to maintain a balance between allowing the creative talent freedom to explore ideas while still making sure the team meets deadlines and creates a strong project, so you need excellent interpersonal and negotiations skills for this career.

How does a creative project manager typically collaborate with cross-functional teams during a project?

A Creative Project Manager serves as a bridge between creative teams, such as designers and copywriters, and other departments like marketing, product, and client services. They facilitate communication by clearly outlining project goals, timelines, and deliverables, ensuring everyone is aligned. Regular check-ins, status updates, and collaborative meetings are common, allowing the manager to address any blockers quickly and keep the project on track. This collaborative structure fosters a dynamic environment where feedback and ideas flow openly, ensuring that creative outputs meet both strategic objectives and client expectations.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a creative project manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Creative Project Manager, you need strong project management abilities, experience in creative industries, and typically a bachelor’s degree in marketing, communications, or a related field. Familiarity with project management tools like Asana, Trello, or Wrike, and design software such as Adobe Creative Suite, is highly valued. Exceptional communication, organization, and leadership skills help you coordinate teams and manage client expectations effectively. These competencies are crucial for delivering high-quality creative projects on time and within budget while maintaining strong team collaboration.

Job description

Overview

Creative Project Manager at Lucid Dream, a custom game and interactive experience studio. We help leaders in medical, scientific, and technical industries use emerging technology to transform engagement, training, and explanations of complex science for providers and patients. We create immersive XR experiences for VR/AR, mobile, desktop, and web, transforming education and engagement through purposeful play. Our office is in Durham, NC, with a hybrid work arrangement (three days in-office per week and two days work-from-home).

Lucid Dream is located in the historic American Tobacco Campus in downtown Durham, near local dining and entertainment venues.

About the Role

As a Creative Project Manager, you will drive immersive projects from concept through delivery. You will bridge creative vision and production reality, collaborating with artists, developers, designers, and clients to ensure projects meet creative benchmarks on time and on budget. You will translate client goals into actionable creative briefs and manage expectations with clarity and confidence.

Qualified candidates have experience working for digital marketing agencies and/or mobile game development studios.

Note: This is a hybrid position requiring three in-office days per week in Durham, NC, and two days work-from-home.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and manage detailed project schedules, ensuring deadlines are realistic and achievable.
  • Break complex, multi-disciplinary projects into clearly scoped tasks with defined owners, dependencies, and acceptance criteria, providing a clear path from kickoff to delivery.
  • Maintain project momentum by tracking progress and ensuring adherence to the project schedule and goals.
  • Proactively identify bottlenecks and implement strategies to expedite projects while maintaining quality standards.
Client & Stakeholder Management
  • Serve as the primary liaison between clients, agency partners, and internal teams; lead kickoffs, progress updates, and reviews.
  • Facilitate clear communication and alignment throughout project lifecycles.
  • Collaborate with internal and external stakeholders to align on strategy, objectives, and deliverables; proactively communicate to avoid misaligned expectations.
Creative Process & Feedback
  • Enforce brand and style guide adherence across deliverables; spot inconsistencies in typography, color, composition, layout, and visual tone before client review.
  • Support creative leads with storyboards, concept art, and visual development reviews to stay aligned with client objectives as projects move from concept to production.
  • Ask clarifying questions to translate subjective client feedback into clear, actionable direction for artists, designers, and developers.
Resource & Budget Management
  • Support capacity planning and resource allocation to ensure projects are staffed effectively.
  • Manage project budgets, flag variances early, and recommend adjustments to protect margins.
  • Partner with the team to evaluate completed projects and identify opportunities for improved efficiency.
Delivery & Logistics Coordination
  • Manage logistics for shoots and deployments, coordinating with internal teams and external vendors to ensure smooth delivery.
  • Coordinate with contractors to define scopes of work and maintain quality standards throughout execution.
  • Coordinate with vendors to secure deployment resources as needed.
  • Oversee build delivery, submissions, and deployment logistics, ensuring technical and compliance requirements are met.
What You’ll Need to Succeed
  • 3-5+ years of relevant project management or production experience in a digital agency environment or digital production studio, preferably in a healthcare advertising setting.
  • Familiarity with project management tools (e.g., ClickUp, Monday, Trello or similar).
  • Excellent written, verbal, and visual communication skills.
  • Strong organizational skills with the ability to manage multiple projects for multiple clients in a fast-paced environment.
  • Comfort with ambiguity and evolving requirements; know when to enforce scope and when to be flexible.
  • Experience managing both creative talent and technical deliverables for web, digital marketing, or game design studios.
  • Professional and proactive attitude with strong attention to detail and a desire to learn.
What We Offer
  • Robust company culture aligned with our core mission and values
  • Talented colleagues and a management team committed to transparent leadership and growth
  • Competitive salary
  • Employer-sponsored health, vision, and dental
  • 401(k) retirement plan with company match
  • Responsible Paid Time Off policy
  • Hybrid work policy
  • Parental leave policy
  • Downtown Durham office with parking
  • Monthly team-building events
