Job description

The MJ Companies exists to inspire the successfulfillment, and wellbeing of each person we serve: our associate and their families, business partners, clients, and the community. This statement drives everything we do, and we are committed to your personal fulfillment and professional success.

The MJ Companies is seeking a Director of Marketing who is responsible for leading and executing a scalable, B2B-focused marketing function that drives brand awareness, demand generation, and pipeline growth in support of MJ's growth objectives. This role owns the day-to-day leadership of the Marketing & Communications team-including brand management, content strategy, digital marketing, creative production, and field and event marketing-while partnering closely with the CMO and sales leadership to ensure marketing directly contributes to profitable growth. The Director of Marketing is an experienced B2B marketing leader who is equally comfortable setting strategic direction and rolling up their sleeves to execute alongside the team. This role enables the CMO to operate at the enterprise-wide strategic level while ensuring MJ's brand and pipeline activity never lose momentum.

Key Responsibilities

  • Marketing Strategy & Planning
    • Develop and execute an integrated B2B marketing strategy aligned with MJ's annual and long-term growth objectives, in partnership with the CMO.
    • Build and maintain a scalable marketing planning framework-including annual operating plans, campaign calendars, and budget management-that enables proactive prioritization across competing initiatives.
    • Ensure buyer personas and ideal client profiles are clearly defined, consistently applied, and regularly refined across all business units and practice areas, focusing marketing efforts toward the highest-opportunity segments for profitable growth.
    • Execute go-to-market strategies as designed in partnership with the CMO, bringing each vertical launch to life through campaigns, content, and field activation.
    • Monitor competitive positioning, market trends, and industry dynamics to inform marketing strategy and messaging differentiation.
  • Demand Generation & Pipeline Growth
    • Own and evolve MJ's demand generation engine-including HubSpot campaign architecture, lead scoring, MQL definition, and pipeline attribution-to produce measurable marketing contribution to revenue.
    • Plan, execute, and optimize multi-channel B2B campaigns across paid, organic, email, and social channels, with a focus on generating qualified leads for the production and business development teams.
    • Partner with the Digital Marketing Specialist to manage SEO/SEM strategy, website performance, and conversion optimization.
    • Design and manage field and event marketing initiatives-including executive roundtables, client education events, industry sponsorships, and market-specific activation-that support producer relationship-building and strengthen MJ's presence in target markets.
    • Establish and report on marketing KPIs, dashboards, and attribution reporting in HubSpot, ensuring leadership has clear visibility into marketing's contribution to pipeline and revenue.
  • Brand, Content & Creative
    • Serve as the steward of MJ's brand identity, ensuring consistency across all external touchpoints-digital, print, client-facing, and community-including MJ Foundation brand alignment.
    • Lead the development and execution of MJ's content and thought leadership strategy, including editorial calendar management, SME content capture, and multi-format content distribution.
    • Oversee and protect the team's AI automation and creative production capability, ensuring these resources are deployed strategically for high-volume deliverables such as RFP template production, lookbooks, and campaign assets.
    • Provide strategic direction to marketing team members for content execution and campaign asset delivery.
    • Oversee vendor and agency relationships for creative, media, digital, and event production as needed.
  • Team Leadership & Development
    • Lead, develop, and retain a high-performing Marketing & Communications team, setting clear performance expectations, providing regular coaching and feedback, and creating meaningful development pathways for each team member.
    • Foster a team culture that is creative, accountable, data-informed, and collaborative.
    • Partner with the CMO on succession planning and team structure evolution as MJ's marketing function scales.
  • Cross-Functional Partnership & Sales Alignment
    • Partner with sales leadership and enablement teams, ensuring marketing-sourced content, campaigns, and tools are integrated into producer and BD team workflows and support profitable pipeline growth.
    • Support go-to-market execution and market expansion efforts, bringing marketing capability to new market launches and growth initiatives as directed by the CMO.
    • Represent the marketing function in cross-functional planning conversations, ensuring marketing priorities are visible and aligned with enterprise strategic imperatives.
    • Support the MJ Foundation's communications and brand needs as directed by the CMO.
  • Marketing Operations & Technology
    • Own MJ's marketing technology stack, with primary responsibility for HubSpot Marketing Hub and Content Hub-ensuring both platforms are fully adopted, properly configured, and producing reliable campaign performance and attribution data.
    • Leverage AI tools and content automation capabilities to expand the team's production capacity and output quality, advancing existing workflows and identifying new opportunities to scale efficiently.
    • Develop and maintain a marketing project management system that provides the team, the CMO, and cross-functional stakeholders real-time visibility into priorities, timelines, and progress.

Technical Functions

  • Advanced proficiency in HubSpot Marketing Hub and Content Hub, including campaign setup, workflow automation, lead scoring, and performance reporting.
  • Working knowledge of SEO/SEM tools (e.g., SEMrush, Google Search Console), Google Analytics, and paid digital advertising platforms.
  • Proficiency in project management platforms (e.g., Monday.com, Asana, or equivalent) for team workflow and cross-functional visibility.
  • Familiarity with Adobe Creative Suite, Canva, or equivalent creative platforms sufficient to provide informed creative direction.

Required Experience

  • Proven B2B marketing leader with experience building and scaling a marketing function-not just operating within one.
  • Equally comfortable setting strategic direction and executing as an individual contributor; this role requires both.
  • Strong demand generation background with demonstrated ability to build HubSpot-driven pipeline attribution and campaign measurement.
  • Exceptional communicator and collaborator; able to partner across sales, leadership, and cross-functional teams with credibility.
  • Data-driven and analytically minded; comfortable building dashboards, interpreting performance metrics, and making investment recommendations.
  • Demonstrates humility and curiosity-asks why before changing what's been built, and brings a genuine interest in MJ's business, clients, and industry.
  • High ownership mindset; thrives in a growth-stage environment where ambiguity is normal and momentum matters.

Education / Experience

  • 10+ years of progressive B2B marketing experience, with at least 3-5 years in a marketing leadership role.
  • Insurance, financial services, or professional services industry experience strongly preferred.
  • Bachelor's degree in Marketing, Communications, Business Administration, or a related field required.
  • Master's degree or MBA preferred.
  • HubSpot certification preferred.
