The Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) is a North Carolina State University institutional research center. Located within the University's visionary Centennial Campus, ITRE conducts surface, water, and air transportation research, while providing professional training and educational opportunities. ITRE collaborates with other University of North Carolina (UNC) system campuses and partners with transportation professionals around the globe.
ITRE was authorized by the NC General Assembly in 1976 and chartered by the UNC System Board of Governors in 1978. ITRE operated fully as an inter-institutional unit of the UNC System until 1992 when it moved to NC State's campus. From 1992 to 2012, ITRE continued to operate as a multi-campus institute, reporting to the UNC System office for strategic direction with administrative support and oversight from NC State. Essential Job Duties
The Communications & Marketing Specialist is part of the ITRE Creative team and responsible for overseeing the strategic planning, execution, and optimization of specific ITRE campaigns, resources, and communications across a variety of platforms, including both online and print. This position will collaborate with teams across ITRE to elevate the visibility and impact of the institute's initiatives.
This role will be responsible for developing and managing campaigns, and supporting communications needs for various programs (including RailTAP, NC Vision Zero, LTAP, AirTAP) and events (e.g. NC Traffic Safety Conference).
Key Responsibilities:
  • Marketing
    • Content Creation: Create content including digital ads, outreach materials, graphics, short-form videos, and strategic messaging to drive traffic to ITRE resources, events, and classes.
    • Collaboration: Work closely with graphic designers and video producers on ITRE Creative Team to produce graphics and videos for public outreach.
    • Promotional Strategy: Create and implement marketing plans for safety campaigns and events. Serve as Chair of the NC Traffic Safety Conference Marketing Subcommittee.
  • Social Media
    • Content Development: Craft engaging content (including copy, images, and short-form video) for ITRE pages.
    • Community Management: Monitor social channels, respond to comments/messages, and foster a positive, active community on ITRE pages.
    • Strategy & Planning: Develop and execute a comprehensive social media strategy aligned with broader marketing goals and brand identity.
  • Email Newsletters
    • Content Strategy and Development: Write email newsletters, including the monthly Traffic Safety Advocate, NCTSC, RailTAP, and the quarterly LTAP newsletter.
    • Contact List Management: Manage contact lists for various ITRE groups.
  • Evaluation/Reporting
    • Search Engine Optimization (SEO): Optimize website content, campaigns, and digital ads for SEO. Research and implement content recommendations to increase the reach of ITRE resources and campaigns.
    • Performance Evaluation: Evaluate effectiveness of communications efforts, develop approaches to improve outcomes, and work to implement these improvements.
    • Quarterly Reports: Assist staff with quarterly reports.
  • Events (average one day/month and 3-5 annual conferences)
    • Attend ITRE-sponsored events to take photos and write about them, including but not limited to:
      • NC Traffic Safety Conference (biennial 2.5 day conference)
      • NC World Day of Remembrance
      • LTAP, AirTAP and RailTAP classes
      • Community and professional meetings

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's degree and two years of experience related to the area of assignment; or equivalent combination of training and experience. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions

Other Required Qualifications
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
  • Proven working experience in digital marketing
  • Demonstrable experience leading and managing SEO/SEM, marketing database, email, social media and/or display advertising campaigns
  • Strong editing and proofreading skills
  • Social media management experience
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Strong attention to detail

Preferred Qualifications
  • Knowledge of behavior change communication, public health marketing, and/or psychology of persuasion
  • Working knowledge of ad serving tools
  • Experience with the development, tracking, and management of paid advertising, including social media advertising and traditional advertising
  • Experience in video production

  • Knowledge and experience with Search Engine Optimization
