What are CRAC units?

CRAC stands for Computer Room Air Conditioner. CRAC units are specialized air conditioning systems designed to maintain the temperature, humidity, and air distribution in data centers and server rooms. They are critical for preventing overheating of IT equipment and ensuring optimal performance and longevity of servers and networking hardware. Unlike standard air conditioners, CRAC units provide precise environmental control and often have redundancy features to prevent downtime.

What jobs make $3,000 a month without a degree?

Jobs such as commercial truck drivers, sales representatives, and skilled trades like electricians or plumbers can often pay around $3,000 monthly without requiring a college degree. These roles typically require specialized training, certifications, or licenses, and may involve physically demanding work or irregular schedules.

What are some common challenges faced by CRAC (Computer Room Air Conditioning) technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

CRAC technicians often encounter challenges such as troubleshooting complex HVAC systems, responding to emergency breakdowns, and maintaining optimal climate control in data centers or server rooms. Staying current with rapidly evolving technology and adhering to strict safety protocols are also key aspects of the role. Successful technicians use a combination of technical expertise, ongoing training, and clear communication with IT and facilities teams to ensure reliable operation and quick resolution of issues. Proactive maintenance and detailed documentation can further help minimize downtime and improve system performance.

Job description

Job Description
Title: Solution Engineer
Location: Dallas, Tx
Travel: 30% - 40%
Your Role
As a Solutions Engineer, you will serve as the primary technical partner to the Sales organization and the lead engineer responsible for developing accurate, customer ready data center fit out solutions. You will translate customer requirements into practical, technically sound data center designs that account for space, power, cooling, and operational constraints. This includes creating and reviewing layouts, evaluating feasibility, and guiding customers through the tradeoffs and decisions that shape their infrastructure footprint.
This role requires strong working knowledge of both electrical and mechanical data center systems-including generators, UPS systems, switchgear, chillers, CRAC/CRAH units, airflow design, and emerging liquid cooling methods-along with hands-on experience using layout or modeling tools such as AutoCAD. You do not need to be a deep-driving subject matter expert, but you must be able to confidently speak the customer's language and translate technical concepts into clear, business aligned recommendations.
You will work directly with customers throughout the engagement: conducting site tours, leading technical presentations, validating requirements, reviewing fit outs design, and ensuring the proposed solution is fully aligned with Digital Realty's capabilities and the customer's operational needs. Connectivity (cross connects, carriers, cloud onramps) is huge plus.
What You'll Do
  • Partner with Sales during customer discovery sessions to understand capacity, power, cooling, and layout requirements
  • Design and propose data center fit outs including cage/cabinet layouts, electrical distribution, and cooling configurations
  • Use AutoCAD or similar tools to review or create customer layout concepts
  • Lead discussions on generators, UPS systems, switchgear, grounding, power density, and redundancy models
  • Translate cooling requirements into viable solutions involving chillers, CRAH/CRAC units, airflow design, hot/cold aisle separation, and emerging liquid cooling methods
  • Guide customers through the technical feasibility of their requested solutions
  • Support RFP/RFI technical responses, solution write-ups, capacity reviews, and infrastructure diagrams
  • Work with engineering, operations, and delivery teams to validate feasibility and timelines
  • Conduct customer tours and provide clear, confident explanations of technical infrastructure
  • Provide connectivity guidance on cross connects, carriers (AT&T, Verizon), cloud onramps (Azure, AWS), and service fabrics
  • Stay current on data center mechanical, electrical, and interconnection trends

What You'll Bring
  • Experience in pre-sales engineering, solutions engineering, or technical consulting
  • Strong working knowledge of data center electrical systems (generators, UPS, switchgear, grounding, distribution)
  • Strong working knowledge of mechanical systems (chillers, CRAC/CRAH, airflow, liquid cooling, thermal design)
  • Ability to create or interpret data center layouts, ideally with AutoCAD or equivalent
  • Experience speaking with enterprise customers and translating technical requirements into feasible solutions
  • Understanding of connectivity basics: cross connects, carriers, cloud providers (Azure, AWS)
  • Ability to travel up to 40% for tours, design sessions, and customer workshops
  • Excellent communication and technical storytelling skills
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related field preferred
