What jobs does a CPA get you?

A CPA (Certified Public Accountant) can qualify you for roles such as auditor, tax accountant, financial analyst, management accountant, and internal auditor. These positions typically require strong knowledge of accounting principles, financial regulations, and proficiency with accounting software like QuickBooks or Excel.

What are CPAs?

CPAs, or Certified Public Accountants, are licensed accounting professionals who have met specific education, examination, and experience requirements. They are qualified to provide a range of accounting services, including auditing, tax preparation, financial planning, and consulting. CPAs must adhere to strict ethical standards and complete continuing education to maintain their license. Their expertise is highly valued in public accounting firms, corporations, government agencies, and nonprofit organizations.

What is the highest paying CPA job?

The highest paying CPA jobs are typically senior roles such as Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or Partner at accounting firms, where compensation can reach six or seven figures annually. These positions require extensive experience, advanced certifications like CPA or CMA, and strong leadership skills, often involving strategic financial management and decision-making responsibilities.

Can you make $500,000 a year as an accountant?

While most accountants earn less than $500,000 annually, senior roles such as CFOs or partners in large firms can reach or exceed this level with extensive experience, advanced certifications like CPA or CMA, and a strong professional network. Achieving such income typically requires leadership responsibilities, specialization, and often working in high-paying industries or firms.

What are some common challenges CPAs face when working with clients during tax season?

CPAs often encounter tight deadlines, last-minute document submissions, and rapidly changing tax regulations during tax season. Managing multiple clients simultaneously can require strong organizational skills and the ability to prioritize tasks under pressure. Effective communication with clients is essential to clarify complex tax issues and ensure all necessary information is gathered on time. Being adaptable and detail-oriented helps CPAs deliver accurate results even in a fast-paced environment.

Accountants, including CPAs, can earn $100,000 or more annually, especially with experience, advanced certifications, or in senior roles such as managerial or specialized positions. Salaries vary by industry, location, and level of responsibility, with some regions and sectors offering higher compensation. Continuing education and proficiency in accounting software can also impact earning potential.

What Do CPAs Do?

CPAs, or Certified Public Accountants, are accountants, business consultants, and financial auditors. They can handle any number of financial services, from corporate finance to tax preparation. Often employed by corporations and associations, CPAs keep track of the finances and are sometimes employed as Chief Financial Officers or finance managers. The goals of most CPAs relate to assurance services, and they aim to keep their clients informed to make better financial decisions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CPA, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CPA, you need a strong background in accounting principles, financial analysis, and compliance, along with a bachelor's degree in accounting and successful completion of the CPA exam. Familiarity with accounting software such as QuickBooks, Excel, and enterprise resource planning (ERP) systems is essential, and ongoing education or certification updates are often required. Strong attention to detail, integrity, and effective communication skills set outstanding CPAs apart. These competencies ensure accurate financial reporting, adherence to regulations, and valuable guidance for clients or organizations.

Job description

Certified Public Accountant (CPA) - Disaster Recovery Housing Program
Job Description
This role supports a large-scale, federally funded disaster recovery housing program focused on rebuilding homes for communities impacted by recent hurricanes. The CPA manages core financial operations during a critical ramp-up phase, with a strong focus on payment processing, reconciliations, and reporting across multiple funding streams. This position offers significant ownership and visibility within a lean team and is ideal for professionals interested in government-funded programs and compliance-heavy environments.
Responsibilities
  • Manage program-related bank accounts across multiple funding streams and ensure accurate cash management.
  • Perform ongoing account reconciliations to maintain accurate and timely financial records.
  • Ensure all accounting activities align with GAAP-compliant accounting principles and standards.
  • Oversee and support high-volume transaction tracking tied to homeowner reimbursements and contractor payments.
  • Administer and monitor payment processing workflows, including accounts receivable, accounts payable, reimbursements, and contractor payments.
  • Prepare and support financial reporting for program leadership and stakeholders, ensuring clarity and accuracy across funding sources.
  • Maintain and manage the general ledger to reflect all program-related financial activity accurately.
  • Partner closely with compliance teams and program leadership to maintain audit-ready financial records and documentation.
  • Support audit readiness efforts by organizing, documenting, and reconciling financial data tied to approvals and payments.
  • Review and reconcile documentation related to payment approvals, reimbursements, and contractor invoices.
  • Help design, stand up, and manage the payment and reconciliation processes for the program during a fast-moving ramp-up phase.
  • Identify opportunities to clean up, streamline, and organize financial processes rather than only maintaining existing workflows.
  • Work independently in a less structured, evolving environment while meeting deadlines and maintaining a high level of accuracy.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of financial controls, documentation standards, and reporting practices in a compliance-heavy setting.

Essential Skills
  • Active or eligible CPA credential.
  • 5+ years of accounting and finance experience, including account reconciliations, financial reporting, and general ledger management.
  • Strong understanding of GAAP accounting principles and their application in complex program environments.
  • Experience managing high-volume financial transactions, particularly in payment-intensive programs.
  • Advanced proficiency in Excel and comfort working in spreadsheet-heavy environments.
  • Experience working with multiple bank accounts and cash management activities.
  • Proven ability to work independently in a fast-moving, less structured environment.
  • Demonstrated experience supporting payment processing workflows such as accounts receivable, accounts payable, reimbursements, and contractor payments.

Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience supporting government-funded programs such as CDBG-DR, FEMA, HUD, or other grant-funded initiatives.
  • Background in construction, real estate, or project-based accounting environments.
  • Exposure to audit readiness and compliance-heavy environments with rigorous documentation requirements.
  • Experience reviewing and reconciling documentation tied to payment approvals, reimbursements, and contractor payments.
  • Ability to design, clean up, and organize financial processes and controls, not just maintain existing structures.
  • Interest in working on high-impact programs that support disaster recovery and community rebuilding.
  • Comfort collaborating with cross-functional teams, including compliance and program leadership, in a lean organizational structure.

Work Environment
This is a fully remote position that requires working Eastern Standard Time (EST) hours. The engagement is long-term, expected to run for more than two years, and offers a high degree of ownership and visibility within a lean team. The role will start on a part-time basis and is expected to ramp up to full-time hours over the next 6-8 weeks.
