POSITION:Career Teacher  6 - 8 with Personal Finance Preferred

Buckhannon-Upshur Middle School

IMMEDIATE SUPERVISOR: Principal

FLSA STATUS:             Exempt

EMPLOYMENT Term:    200 days annually, pursuant to WV code 18-5-45

SALARY:             Pursuant to WV Code 18A-4-2, in accordance with

Upshur County Teacher Salary Schedule, commensurate with experience and education level

EVALUATION:  Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code 18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5310, and UCBOE Policy 5010

JOB SUMMARY:  Provide instruction using creative strategies, innovative class structures and time frames and sound pedagogical practices to deliver a variety of CTE related courses, developing an "empowerment" mindset in middle school students. The Empowerment/Careers teacher will prepare the middle school student to examine fields of study, vocational venues and academic paths to further pursue CTE preferences as they progress from middle school to high school to post-secondary education and the world of work. 

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Create learning environments conducive to empowering students to explore educational/vocational offerings correlated to interests, skills and learning styles.
  • Have a working knowledge of the 16 Career Clusters.
  • Have a demonstrated knowledge in Project Based Learning.
  • Design simulated workplace environments for students to practice and perfect skills.
  • Collaborate with other teachers to make connections between "Empowerment" course delivery processes and the "traditional" teaching/ learning process.
  • Collaborate with other such programs throughout West Virginia to determine most effective strategies, techniques, learning environments and delivery formats.
  • Plan and implement the WV College and Career Readiness Standards and Objectives.
  • Plan and implement the "empowerment" collaborative models with special education students and teachers.
  • Work with community businesses to expose students to a variety of work- based opportunities in their own community.
  • Arrange business site visits and classroom presentations which enhance knowledge growth in a given career cluster.
  • Demonstrate a positive interpersonal skill set in order to work effectively with students, parents, peers, community leaders and local and state businesses.
  • Willing to participate in any and all trainings associated with career clusters, project-based learning, simulated workplace and others as deemed appropriate for student success.
  • Willing to implement any other programs designated by principal, central office and WVDE for school improvement.
  • Establish and maintain a safe and appropriate learning environment.
  • Fulfill and demonstrate professional growth in the West Virginia High Quality Standards and improvement in professional practice.
  • Includes supervisory and/or other duties as assigned by Principal.
  • Understand and Implement the Professional Teaching Standards

QUALIFICATIONS:

Valid teaching certificate licensing the individual to teach in the specializations and grade levels, pursuant to WV Code 18A-3-2 ; Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code 18-5-15c and/or 18A-3-10, as appropriate; Meet the qualifications outlined in WV Code 18A-3-2a. Preference will be given to individuals with credentials and/or experience working with CTE, Project-based learning, and simulated workplace environments.

Maintain up-to-date certifications/licensure as per WVBE Policy 5202.

Personal Finance Endorsement preferred

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may frequently lift and/or move at least 10 - 20 pounds of materials.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision such as to read handwritten or typed material, the ability to adjust focus. The position requires the individual to meet multiple demands from several people and interact with the public and other staff members.
