Position Description
Performs professional protective work providing firefighting services, in addition to emergency and nonemergency rescue services; does related work as required. Work is performed under regular supervision.
Position Objectives
  • Responds to fires, medical emergencies, hazardous materials incidents, and other natural and manmade disasters and rescue events with other career and volunteer members of the Powhatan County Fire and Rescue Department; maintains records and files; prepares reports.
  • Examines patients; provides appropriate care; completes reports; relays information to providers of higher care.
  • Drives and operates various types of fire and rescue equipment.
  • Assures that emergency vehicles are fully stocked, equipped, cleaned, and in good running order.
  • Provides leadership depending on the nature of the incident and the affiliation and certification of other response personnel.
  • Maintains cleanliness and state of readiness of fire and rescue stations, apparatus, and all related equipment.
  • Performs community service activities.
  • Completes all required reports for all incidents his or her crew responds to
  • Attends training sessions as required.
  • Assist with operations during emergency management activities.
  • Performs related tasks as required and assigned.

Desirable Training and Experience
  • Graduation from high school or hold a graduation equivalency diploma (GED).Related education, experience, and training required. Virginia or Nationally Registered EMT-Basic or higher; NIMS IS100, IS-200, IS-700, and IS-800 required prior to employment date.
Special Requirements
  • Must be at least 19 years of age on first day of employment; have three years driving experience, pass a criminal records and background check; pass a driving history check; pass a pre-employment physical (medical) exam.
  • Must provide documented and validated previous experience as a practicing EMT-Basic and/or ALS provider for a minimum of 12 months in a 911-based EMS system.
  • Possession of or ability to readily obtain and retain a valid driver's license issued by the Commonwealth of Virginia for the type of vehicle or equipment operated.
  • Must maintain Advanced Life Support certification and valid driver's license for duration of employment.Must obtain Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) and Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) within six (6) months of employment and maintain ACLS & PALS certification for duration of employment.
  • Ability to meet all certification requirements set forth by the Virginia Department of Health, Office of Emergency Medical Services.May have to work beyond work schedule with little or no notice.
Cannot serve as an active operational or administrative member of any volunteer Fire or EMS agency within the County of Powhatan.

  • Thorough knowledge in rescue and emergency service delivery.
  • Ability to think and act quickly and appropriately in all situations.

The supervisor assigns work in terms of general instructions. The supervisor spot-checks completed work for compliance with procedures, accuracy, and the nature and propriety of the results. During high-risk activities, the supervisor may provide direct supervision of work.
