Cots Implementation information

What is COTS in the IT industry?

COTS in the IT industry refers to Commercial Off-The-Shelf software or hardware products that are ready-made and available for purchase, installation, and use without custom development. Professionals involved in COTS implementation evaluate, configure, and integrate these products into existing systems, often requiring knowledge of vendor specifications, compatibility, and deployment processes.

What is COTS implementation?

COTS implementation refers to the process of integrating Commercial Off-The-Shelf (COTS) software products into an organization’s existing systems and workflows. Instead of developing custom software from scratch, organizations use pre-built, commercially available solutions to meet their needs. This approach can save time and resources, but it also involves careful planning, customization, and testing to ensure the COTS product fits the organization's requirements. Proper COTS implementation includes selecting the right product, configuring it, migrating data, and training users.

Is Salesforce a COTS solution?

Salesforce is a commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software platform widely used for customer relationship management (CRM) and enterprise applications. As a COTS solution, it offers pre-built features that can be customized to meet specific business needs, making it a common choice for implementation roles requiring knowledge of cloud-based systems and configuration skills.

What are some common challenges faced during COTS implementation projects, and how can candidates prepare to address them?

COTS (Commercial Off-The-Shelf) implementation projects often encounter challenges such as aligning the software’s standard functionality with unique business processes, managing stakeholder expectations, and handling integration with existing systems. Candidates can prepare by developing strong communication and problem-solving skills, gaining experience in requirements gathering, and familiarizing themselves with change management practices. Being adaptable and proactive in learning about the specific COTS products involved will help you quickly identify gaps and collaborate effectively with both technical teams and end-users.

Description

POSITION SUMMARY

We are seeking an experienced Senior Integrations Engineer to build and support enterprise integrations that connect customers, partners, and internal business systems. This role will spend most of its time developing integrations within the Evans integration platform while helping execute our long-term strategy to migrate integrations away from legacy applications.

This is not a traditional software engineering role; however, prior software engineering experience is essential. The ideal candidate understands how enterprise applications are built and integrated, allowing them to implement reliable, scalable, and maintainable solutions while contributing informed recommendations during technical solution discussions.

This is a highly collaborative, customer-facing position that works daily with Engineering, Operations, Sales, Customer Success, and customers throughout the integration lifecycle.

ROLES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Design, build, test, deploy, and maintain enterprise integrations using Evans integration platform.
  • Develop workflow-based integrations leveraging REST APIs, event-driven architectures, message queues, and data transformation.
  • Own integrations from technical discovery through production deployment and ongoing operational support.
  • Build resilient integrations that prioritize:
  • Data integrity
  • Idempotency
  • Error handling and recovery
  • Telemetry and observability
  • Retry and resiliency patterns
  • Configure integrations between custom applications and commercial off-the-shelf (COTS) software platforms.
  • Participate in customer technical discovery sessions to understand business processes and integration requirements.
  • Recommend implementation approaches and identify technical risks while partnering with Evans technology leadership on solution direction.
  • Troubleshoot production issues, participate in incident reviews, and continuously improve integration reliability.
  • Create and maintain technical documentation for implemented integrations.

Requirements

Required

Prior experience as a Software Engineer, Integration Engineer, or Solutions Engineer with hands-on implementation responsibilities.

Experience building enterprise API integrations.

Strong understanding of REST APIs and API lifecycle concepts.

Experience with event-driven architectures and message-based integrations.

Strong knowledge of JSON, XML, data mapping, and ETL processes.

Experience integrating custom applications with commercial software platforms.

Understanding of authentication and authorization protocols, including OAuth and OpenID Connect.

Working knowledge of Amazon cloud services.

Ability to communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Comfortable leading technical discovery conversations and asking thoughtful questions before proposing solutions.

Preferred

Experience with Boomi, MuleSoft, or other enterprise integration/iPaaS platforms.

Familiarity with Enterprise Integration Patterns and API-first design principles.

Experience with EDI integrations.

Exposure to enterprise architecture practices.

Familiarity with .NET application development.
