Job description

Substitute Cosmetology/Manicurist Instructor
Position: Substitute Cosmetology Instructor
Department: Cosmetology
Employment Type: Substitute / On-Call
Reports To: School Director / Administration
Rate: $22.00
Position Summary
The Substitute Cosmetology Instructor provides classroom and clinic-floor coverage when a regularly scheduled instructor is absent or additional instructional support is needed. The substitute instructor is responsible for maintaining a professional, safe, organized, and positive learning environment while ensuring students remain engaged and continue progressing in their cosmetology education.
The instructor will follow the school's established curriculum, procedures, schedules, and expectations while supervising students in theory, practical instruction, and client services.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide substitute instructional coverage for cosmetology classes as assigned.
  • Follow the school's established curriculum, lesson plans, and daily classroom schedule.
  • Provide practical instruction when required.
  • Demonstrate cosmetology and manicuring techniques and procedures in accordance with the school's curriculum.
  • Supervise students performing practical assignments and client services.
  • Maintain active supervision of students on the clinic floor.
  • Assist students with proper techniques while encouraging professionalism and independence.
  • Monitor student participation, practical assignments, and classroom activities as directed.
  • Maintain classroom and clinic-floor organization.
  • Ensure students follow sanitation, disinfection, infection-control, and safety procedures.
  • Ensure tools, implements, workstations, and equipment are properly cleaned and disinfected.
  • Enforce school policies, classroom expectations, dress code, and professional conduct.
  • Maintain appropriate instructor-to-student professional boundaries.
  • Communicate student concerns, incidents, injuries, disciplinary issues, or unusual situations to school administration.
  • Complete required instructor paperwork and documentation before the end of the assigned shift.
  • Assist with classroom or clinic-floor cleanup and ensure the instructional area is properly prepared for the next class.
  • Perform other instructional duties reasonably assigned by school administration.
Qualifications
  • Must hold a current and valid California Cosmetology license.
  • Cosmetology teaching or salon experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of current cosmetology practices, sanitation, disinfection, and safety procedures.
  • Ability to demonstrate and explain cosmetology procedures clearly.
  • Ability to effectively supervise and communicate with students.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, dependability, patience, and strong classroom-management skills.
  • Must be able to follow established curriculum and school procedures.
  • Must be available to work on an on-call or as-needed basis.
Substitute Instructor Expectations
Because this is a substitute position, the instructor must be able to enter an established classroom or clinic environment and maintain continuity of instruction. Substitute instructors are expected to follow the regular instructor's lesson plan and school procedures rather than make significant changes to the curriculum or classroom structure without administrative approval.
The Substitute Cosmetology Instructor is expected to maintain the same standards of professionalism, student supervision, safety, sanitation, and documentation required of regularly scheduled instructors.
