What is cosmetic dentistry?

Cosmetic dentistry refers to dental treatments that improve the appearance of your teeth, gums, and smile. While traditional dentistry focuses on oral health and treating dental problems, cosmetic dentistry primarily enhances the look of your teeth through procedures like whitening, veneers, bonding, and crowns. These treatments can address issues such as discoloration, chips, gaps, and misalignment, helping patients achieve a brighter and more aesthetically pleasing smile.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cosmetic dentist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cosmetic Dentist, you need a DDS or DMD degree, state licensure, and specialized training in cosmetic dental procedures such as veneers, whitening, and bonding. Familiarity with digital imaging systems, CAD/CAM technology, and dental lasers is commonly required. Attention to detail, aesthetic sense, and strong interpersonal communication skills help build patient trust and deliver satisfactory results. These competencies ensure safe, effective, and visually appealing dental treatments that meet patients' expectations.

What are the typical collaborative relationships in a cosmetic dentistry practice?

In cosmetic dentistry, practitioners often work closely with dental hygienists, dental assistants, and laboratory technicians to deliver optimal patient outcomes. Collaboration with dental laboratories is especially crucial, as custom veneers, crowns, and implants require precise communication and teamwork to ensure high-quality, aesthetic results. Cosmetic dentists may also consult with orthodontists or periodontists when cases require interdisciplinary care. This teamwork fosters a supportive work environment and ensures comprehensive treatment plans for patients.

What is the difference between Cosmetic Dentistry vs General Dentistry?

AspectCosmetic DentistryGeneral Dentistry
FocusEnhancing appearance of teeth and smileMaintaining overall oral health and function
ProceduresVeneers, whitening, bonding, smile makeoversFillings, cleanings, root canals, extractions
CredentialsDental degree, cosmetic-specific trainingDental degree, general practice license
Work EnvironmentPrivate clinics, cosmetic specialty practicesGeneral dental offices, clinics

Cosmetic Dentistry focuses on improving the appearance of teeth, while General Dentistry emphasizes overall oral health and routine care. Both roles require a dental degree, but cosmetic dentists often pursue additional training in aesthetic procedures. Patients seeking smile enhancement typically visit cosmetic dentists, whereas those needing routine checkups see general dentists.

How much does a cosmetic dentist make in the US?

A cosmetic dentist in the US typically earns between $150,000 and $250,000 annually, with earnings influenced by experience, location, and patient volume. Many also perform procedures like teeth whitening, veneers, and smile makeovers, often working in private practices or dental clinics.

How to get into cosmetic dentistry?

To become a cosmetic dentist, one must first complete a dental degree from an accredited program, obtain licensure, and then pursue specialized training or certification in cosmetic procedures such as veneers, whitening, and smile makeovers. Gaining experience through internships or residencies and staying updated with the latest techniques and tools is also essential.

Job description

DENTAL ASSISTANT

Cosmetic & Aesthetic Dentistry | Elite Private Practice

West Clackamas County, Oregon

Are you a dental assistant who takes pride in exceptional artistry and white-glove patient care?

At our boutique cosmetic dental practice, every patient walks through our doors with a vision — and leaves with a smile that changes their life. We are a highly sought-after, aesthetics-focused private practice renowned for delivering the highest standard of cosmetic and restorative dentistry in the Portland metro area. We are seeking a skilled, polished, and passionate Dental Assistant to join our close-knit, high-performing team.

This is not your average dental office. If you thrive in a sophisticated, fast-paced environment where precision matters, relationships are everything, and excellence is the baseline — we want to meet you.

What You’ll Do:

• Provide expert chairside assistance for cosmetic procedures including porcelain veneers, full-mouth restorations, dental implants, Invisalign, and crown and bridge work

• Deliver a warm, elevated patient experience from the moment of arrival through completion of care

• Prepare, sterilize, and maintain clinical operatories and instrumentation to the highest infection-control standards

• Take high-quality digital X-rays, intraoral scans, and photographs to support precise treatment planning

• Assist with case presentations, supporting patients in understanding and committing to their treatment journey

• Collaborate seamlessly with the doctor and fellow team members to ensure every appointment runs with clinical precision and efficiency

• Maintain accurate patient records using our practice management software

What We’re Looking For:

• Minimum 2 years of dental assisting experience, with a strong preference for cosmetic or fee-for-service practice background

• Oregon Expanded Function Dental Assistant Registration and current Radiology certification required

• Experience with digital workflows (intraoral scanners, digital X-ray, CAD/CAM) is a strong plus

• Impeccable attention to detail and a genuine appreciation for aesthetic excellence

• A professional, composed, and empathetic chairside manner

• Ability to anticipate the doctor’s needs and work with quiet, confident efficiency

• A team-first attitude and a commitment to continuous learning and growth

What We Offer:

• Competitive compensation: $28–$34/hour, commensurate with skill or experience

• Health and dental benefits

• Paid time off and paid holidays

• Continuing education allowance and paid CE days

• A stunning, modern office environment with the latest technology

• A collaborative, supportive team culture where your contributions are genuinely valued

• The opportunity to be part of something exceptional — every single day

This Is Your Practice If You Believe...

...that dentistry is an art form. That a patient’s smile is worth every ounce of care and precision you bring to it. And that the best teams are built on mutual respect, shared pride in their work, and a relentless commitment to doing things right.

Ready to Elevate Your Career?

We’d love to hear from you. Please submit your resume and a brief note about what draws you to cosmetic dentistry.

Candidates selected for an interview will be contacted promptly.

We are an equal opportunity employer. All qualified applicants will receive consideration for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, or national origin..
