About Indiana Women’s Prison:

Indiana Women’s Prison is a maximum‑security facility located in Indianapolis, Indiana, with a capacity of more than 700 incarcerated adult females. As the oldest women’s correctional facility in the United States, it serves individuals with diverse needs, including pregnant, elderly, youthful, medically complex, and high‑profile incarcerated adult females. The facility features the Officer Breann Leath Memorial Maternal‑Child Health Unit, which supports family bonding and re‑entry planning. Incarcerated individuals have access to mental health services, substance use treatment, domestic abuse programming, and educational opportunities. Programs focus on rehabilitation and building confidence for life after release. Staff support a safe, structured environment focused on healing and growth. Role Overview: 

​As a Correctional Captain at the Indiana Women's Prison, you will be responsible for the management, supervision, and safety of the facility, incarcerated individuals, coworkers, and the general public. In addition, you must interpret and apply the IDOC facility rules, policies and procedures in a firm, fair and consistent manner to both incarcerated individuals and staff. You will be responsible for the review and development of policies and procedures related to custody. In the event of an emergency, effective leadership must be immediately exhibited. 

Salary:

The salary for this position traditionally starts at $59,800.00 but may be commensurate with education and work experience. Use our Compensation Calculator to view the total compensation package.

A Day in the Life:

​The essential functions of this role are as follows: 

  • Oversee daily inspections of the units.
  • Track, properly vet, and report all incidents to the Operations Center.
  • Direct assigned staff in maintaining the security and safety of offenders, buildings, and grounds. 
  • Manage staff including training, time management, time off approvals, specific shift assignments, corrective action and performance evaluations. 
  • Assist in identifying offender treatment needs and support programs for treatment and rehabilitation which may include encouraging offenders to accept professional assistance and treatment from staff as needed. 
  • Counsel offenders in an informal and unofficial capacity. 
  • Oversee the records on shift reports, policy and procedure updates and violations of policies and procedures. 
  • Direct staff regarding the maintenance and cleanliness of the facility. 
  • Recruit, select, onboard, and train employees to ensure role responsibilities and expectations are clearly understood while providing opportunities to continue professional development. 
  • Set expectations, measure progress, provide ongoing feedback, and evaluate the performance of employees.  Ensure work adheres to quality standards, deadlines, and proper procedures.

This position is exempt from overtime compensation for additional work hours which may be required to complete essential functions or other assigned work. Exempt employees may work more than 75 hours in a pay period without additional compensation and must report a minimum of 75 hours per pay period of work hours and/or paid leave taken to receive their base biweekly salary.

Individuals in this role should minimally be able to articulate or demonstrate the following:

  • Must possess a valid driver's license. 
  • Must test negative on all drug screenings.  
  • Thorough knowledge of the methods, procedures and practices utilized in a correctional environment. 
  • Ability to supervise and achieve desired results from offenders and staff. 
  • Strong critical thinking skills and the ability to apply as needed. 
  • Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing, including giving clear directions. 
  • Ability to collaborate with other departmental requests regarding custody needs. 
  • Ability to delegate work, set clear direction, and manage workflow. 
  • Ability to effectively give feedback, provide guidance or corrective action, coach, and develop employee skillsets.

You must satisfy the following requirements to continue employment:

  • Complete all mandatory training including the DOC Supervisory Training Program, First Aid, and CPR courses. 

A degree is not required. However, a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE) and at least 4+ years of experience in a correctional institution, law enforcement or military law enforcement, and two (2) years of experience as a correctional supervisor or supervisory training in a related field applying the outlined knowledge, skills, and abilities in a similar role may be considered.

Individuals should have the ability to perform essential functions with or without reasonable accommodation.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Direct Reports:
This role provides supervision for incarcerated individuals and requires a high level of judgment and care.
This role may provide direct supervision for one or more staff members.
