Description:
The Registered Nurse (RN) plans and provides comprehensive nursing care, including executing Licensed Independent Provider orders, dispensing and administering medications, and assisting Licensed Independent Provider in examinations and treatment of patients.
Applies nursing and supervisory techniques required in the care, treatment, and referrals of inmates/residents.
Performs all technical and clinical procedures within the scope of education and licensure.
Attends sick calls with the physician to see inmates/residents, prepares a list of inmates/residents to be examined, and prepares the examining room and equipment.
Operates pill call, dispenses medication, and documents as required by applicable policies and procedures.
Calls the Licensed Independent Providers for medication and treatment orders and other emergencies.
Examines and assesses new inmates/residents with illnesses or injuries, or inmates/residents who become ill or injured.
Refers inmates/residents to the emergency room or other appropriate healthcare facility as required by their condition.
Performs emergency procedures as needed and notifies Licensed Independent Provider for treatment orders.
Assists in coordinating professional medical services provided by contract personnel.
Monitors inmate/resident inpatient hospitalizations for early releases whenever appropriate.
Provides guidance, supervises, and monitors nursing care provided by licensed vocational/practical nursing staff and non-licensed medical staff.
Maintains a good working relationship with facility staff, nursing staff, contract providers, and outside provider agencies.
Utilizes established corporate and facility policies and procedures in making decisions, while using sound independent judgment in meeting responsibilities and performing duties.
Regularly evaluates the provision of medical services to prevent inappropriate use or duplication of services.
Maintains absolute security and confidentiality of all medical records.
Assists with the review of medical files to determine that all provided services are documented.
Closely monitors all potential catastrophic illnesses.
Audits pharmacy use for adherence to formulary as directed or required.
Complies with all applicable pharmacy laws, especially those covering controlled substances.
Observes and records inmate/resident behavior.
Inspects the medical unit for items that could be used as contraband by inmates/residents and securely stores or safely disposes of supplies and equipment.
Provides health counseling and health education on an individual or group basis as required.
Assists in the preparation and maintenance of a variety of standard narrative, statistical, summary, and operational records, reports, and logs, using appropriate grammar.
Reads, analyzes, comprehends, and interprets medical and technical procedures, governmental regulations, and legal and non-legal documents.
Reviews, processes, and responds to lawsuits, attending court hearings when necessary.
Facilitates accreditation of the medical program by providing the required level of efficiency and approved, appropriate medical services.
Prepares and disseminates safety and accident reports as required by policies and procedures and takes appropriate action in cases of serious and unusual incidents and emergencies.
