Position Summary: The Registered Dietitian (RD) delivers medical nutrition therapy services and health education for clients/patients including LGBTQ+ and HIV positive populations. The RD designs and implements nutrition interventions, teaches clients/patients in individual, group and virtual settings, and collaborates with medical, dental, behavioral health providers and support staff. The RD is responsible for documenting nutrition information, creating and analyzing reports in the EHR and other systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Performs clinical nutrition assessments. Evaluates individual dietary needs of clients, considering their health conditions and medications. Educates individuals on nutritional principles, dietary needs, food selection and preparation. Suggests diet modifications and meal plans. Develops individualized nutrition plans that align with clients’ health goals.
  • Educates and supports clients affected by chronic conditions including hypertension, diabetes, HIV, and kidney disease to understand and manage their condition(s). Reviews and shares teaching materials related to nutrition and chronic disease management.
  • Collaborates with medical, dental, behavioral health and support service staff.
  • Participates in quality management and performance improvement efforts.
  • Develops and implements policies and procedures pertinent to food & nutrition programs.
  • Performs client intakes, reviews documents and assesses eligibility for programs based on established policies and procedures. May assist with distributing food vouchers and nutrition supplements for eligible low-income clients.
  • Teaches and mentors other staff members and may precept dietetics students and/or interns.
  • Coordinates group sessions such as workshops and food demonstrations. Participates in health fairs and outreach events.
  • Adheres to established standards of care. Ensures confidentiality and privacy practices in accordance with agency policies, HIPAA and relevant laws, regulations and contract obligations.
  • Documents encounters in the electronic health record (HER) and other designated systems. Follows requirements for medical billing of eligible encounters.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Master’s degree in nutritional science/dietetics required.
  • American Dietetic Association Registration (R.D.) required.
  • Minimum of two years’ work experience in clinical dietetics required.
  • Experience with EHR documentation preferred.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Strong clinical, leadership and organizational skills.
  • Excellent customer service skills and the ability to professionally interact with individuals from diverse populations and accommodate social and cultural differences.
  • Proficient computer skills including use of Microsoft Office programs, Outlook, EHR and reporting applications.
  • Physical demands may include bending and lifting up to 30 pounds when distributing nutritional supplements or supplies.

Schedule & Working Conditions: This position is full-time, predominantly during business hours Monday through Friday and may require occasional evening and weekend hours. The position is based in Detroit with some workdays assigned at the organization’s new Hazel Park clinic. Work is generally performed within a clinic and medical office environment and includes significant in person, phone and email contact with patients/clients, clinical and support staff, funders and the general public.
