Copywriter information

What does a copywriter do?

A copywriter is a professional who creates written content for advertising, marketing, and promotional materials. Their main goal is to craft persuasive and engaging copy that encourages people to take action, such as buying a product, subscribing to a service, or learning more about a brand. Copywriters work on a variety of materials, including advertisements, websites, emails, social media posts, and product descriptions. They often collaborate with designers, marketers, and clients to ensure the messaging aligns with brand objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copywriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copywriter, you need excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that copywriters can produce compelling, targeted content that meets client objectives and drives engagement.

What are some common challenges copywriters face when collaborating with designers and marketing teams?

Copywriters often need to balance creativity with strategic messaging while working closely with designers and marketing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that the written content aligns seamlessly with the visual elements and overall brand voice. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as feedback from multiple stakeholders may require revisions to meet campaign goals. Building strong relationships and maintaining an open feedback loop can help copywriters overcome these challenges and produce cohesive, impactful content.

What is the difference between Copywriter vs Content Writer?

AspectCopywriterContent Writer
Primary FocusCreating persuasive, marketing-oriented content to drive sales or actionsProducing informative, educational, or entertaining content for audiences
Work EnvironmentAdvertising agencies, marketing teams, corporate marketing departmentsBlogs, online publications, corporate websites, content platforms
Required SkillsMarketing knowledge, persuasive writing, SEO basicsResearch skills, storytelling, informational writing
Common UsageAdvertising campaigns, sales pages, product descriptionsArticles, blog posts, whitepapers, newsletters

While both copywriters and content writers create written material, copywriters focus on persuasive content aimed at marketing and sales, whereas content writers produce informative content to engage and educate audiences. Understanding these differences helps employers and job seekers target the right roles and skills.

Can I be a copywriter with no experience?

Yes, entry-level copywriter positions often do not require prior experience and focus on strong writing skills, creativity, and the ability to learn quickly. Building a portfolio of writing samples and gaining familiarity with tools like Google Docs or content management systems can help you start in the field.

Copywriter

Funday

Toronto, ON โ€ข Remote

Full-time

Posted 18 days ago

Job description

Oh, hello there, storyteller.

Funday is a full-service agency. We’re a talented and entrepreneurial group of people who believe it pays to have fun. Great work takes a balance of creativity and performance. Imagination and insight. Fun and brains. We believe in making great work.

Copywriter

As a Copywriter you will report directly to the Associate Creative Director and work closely with the creative team. We are growing quickly and need another set of hands to help with the ever-expanding workload. Your role will be varied and may change from day to day. One minute you’ll be writing a social media post and the next you’ll be working on a brand campaign. We’re a small group scattered around the globe and everyone gets their hands dirty. You’ll always be part of a team that has a passion for great work, including creatives, strategists, technologists, and producers who will help you push the work forward.

Location: You’ll work remotely from BC, AB, or ON.

What you’ll do

  • Develop an understanding of business objectives and audience demographics to create targeted content for our clients
  • Process information supplied by internal and external stakeholders and translate it into effective creative work
  • Translate creative direction and copy points from creative briefs into engaging and effective copy concepts
  • Write posts, scripts, and long form copy for a range of media and online/offline formats
  • Maintain high standards of copywriting
  • Write headlines that will make any parent proud

What you’ll need to succeed

  • 3-5 years in a copywriting role
  • Digital copywriting experience
  • Experience working in an agency environment is an asset
  • Portfolio demonstrating your copywriting and storytelling craft – digital work samples are preferred
  • Exceptional written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to demonstrate an outstanding degree of accuracy and attention to detail in all work
  • Ability to write in a range of voices and styles for varied projects with diverse audiences
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously and juggle diverse writing demands
  • Ability to concept ideas based off of strong insights

You’ll want to read this part

  • Portfolio required: no portfolio, no consideration.
  • If you live in Canada, are able to work here, and you are in one of these provinces: BC, AB or ON - please apply! Otherwise, we’re sorry, we’re not set up to support staff outside of these regions.
  • Please note: we post the same role in multiple locations to help us cast a wide net. Applying to each location for a posting will not increase your chances. Now that we've saved you some time, go do something fun!
  • This posting is for an existing vacancy we are looking to fill immediately and not a prospective future role (i.e. we’re saying this isn’t a ghost job)

Come be a Funatic

We believe you won’t perform at your best if you’re not having fun. And you can’t have fun if you’re not performing. We believe this creates the best client + agency relationships and is the best way to make great work.

We believe in respect, inclusivity, kindness, equity, and equality. We want to make a positive impact. We believe that collaboration is the fun part of being at work. We strive to create a culture in which “we” is more important than “me”.
Apart from loving terrible, fun puns, we’re  young, and we’re growing fast – which means you’ll have a chance to make your mark and grow with us. We’re also almost 100% remote, and that might not appeal to everyone – but if you value flexibility, it’s perfect.

Join us.
