What does a copywriter do?

A copywriter is a professional who creates written content for advertising, marketing, and promotional materials. Their main goal is to craft persuasive and engaging copy that encourages people to take action, such as buying a product, subscribing to a service, or learning more about a brand. Copywriters work on a variety of materials, including advertisements, websites, emails, social media posts, and product descriptions. They often collaborate with designers, marketers, and clients to ensure the messaging aligns with brand objectives.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a copywriter, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copywriter, you need excellent writing, grammar, and editing skills, often supported by a degree in communications, marketing, or English. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), SEO tools, and analytics platforms is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and the ability to work under tight deadlines are standout soft skills in this role. These skills ensure that copywriters can produce compelling, targeted content that meets client objectives and drives engagement.

What are some common challenges copywriters face when collaborating with designers and marketing teams?

Copywriters often need to balance creativity with strategic messaging while working closely with designers and marketing teams. One common challenge is ensuring that the written content aligns seamlessly with the visual elements and overall brand voice. Effective communication and flexibility are crucial, as feedback from multiple stakeholders may require revisions to meet campaign goals. Building strong relationships and maintaining an open feedback loop can help copywriters overcome these challenges and produce cohesive, impactful content.

Job description

Copywriter

About the Role

The Copywriter is a senior creative writer responsible for developing original, high-quality content across digital, editorial, brand and audience-facing channels. This role turns complex ideas, business objectives and source material into clear, compelling narratives that engage intended audiences and reflect a consistent brand voice.

Working across formats, the Copywriter often begins with an idea, brief or business objective rather than finished source material. This person identifies the story, develops the narrative and creates polished content from the ground up.

As part of an integrated creative team, the Copywriter partners with strategists, producers, designers and cross-functional stakeholders to develop work that is strategically sound, creatively strong and appropriate for each channel.

Success in this role means creating original content that makes complex ideas understandable and important messages memorable, while maintaining a clear and consistent voice across audiences and formats.

What You'll Do

  • Develop original copy and content from briefs, business objectives, source material and stakeholder input.
  • Shape messaging, narratives and creative concepts for high-visibility content and brand initiatives.
  • Write across formats, including web content, feature stories, campaigns, newsletters, social content, presentations, scripts and branded experiences.
  • Translate complex or technical information into clear, engaging and accessible stories for different audiences.
  • Partner with stakeholders to understand the objective, audience and point of view behind each assignment and determine the strongest narrative approach.
  • Collaborate with designers and other creatives to develop integrated concepts where copy and visual storytelling work together.
  • Develop headlines, messaging frameworks, campaign concepts and other creative copy that brings ideas to life.
  • Adapt narratives and messaging across formats while maintaining consistency in voice and intent.
  • Present and articulate creative thinking, incorporating feedback while protecting the strength and clarity of the work.
  • Manage multiple assignments and deliver high-quality work within fast-moving, deadline-driven timelines.

What You'll Bring

  • 6-8+ years of experience in copywriting, editorial, journalism, brand writing or a related creative discipline.
  • Exceptional writing and storytelling skills, supported by a portfolio of original work across multiple formats and audiences.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop narratives and content from an initial idea or brief, rather than relying on fully developed source copy.
  • Strong conceptual thinking and the ability to find the story, point of view or creative idea within complex information.
  • Experience writing for digital, brand, editorial or audience-facing content.
  • Ability to shift comfortably between long-form storytelling, concise messaging and creative copy.
  • Strong understanding of voice, tone and audience, with the ability to adapt writing for different channels while maintaining consistency.
  • Excellent editorial judgment, attention to detail and ability to simplify complex subjects without losing accuracy or nuance.
  • Comfort working collaboratively with strategists, designers, producers and senior stakeholders in a fast-paced environment.
