What Is a Copy Editor?

As a copy editor, your responsibilities and duties include reviewing written material, called copy, before it is put into print or posted online. You examine the material for grammar and spelling mistakes and structural errors. You also ensure that the tone, tense, and style meet the guidelines set out by the publisher. If you work in journalism for the copy desk of a news organization, you not only proofread but also fact check and make sure there is no slanderous content. You also check headlines to ensure they are attention grabbing and grammatically correct.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Copy Editor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copy Editor, you need a strong command of grammar, punctuation, and style, often backed by a degree in English, journalism, or a related field. Familiarity with editing software such as Adobe InCopy, Microsoft Word's track changes, and style guides like AP or Chicago Manual of Style is typically required. Attention to detail, time management, and strong communication skills help Copy Editors excel in this role. These competencies are crucial for ensuring error-free, clear, and consistent content that meets publication standards and deadlines.

How do copy editors typically collaborate with writers and other editorial team members during the editing process?

Copy editors work closely with writers to clarify meaning, improve readability, and ensure consistency in style and tone. They often communicate suggested changes and questions through tracked edits or comments, fostering open dialogue to refine the content. Collaboration with other editorial team members, such as fact-checkers or managing editors, is also common to ensure accuracy and adherence to publication standards. Regular meetings and digital collaboration tools help maintain workflow efficiency and resolve any editorial concerns promptly.

What does a copy editor do?

A copy editor is responsible for reviewing and correcting written material to ensure accuracy, clarity, and consistency. They check for grammar, spelling, punctuation, and style errors, and may also verify facts and improve the flow of the text. Copy editors work with writers and other editors to polish content before publication, whether it's for books, magazines, websites, or other media. Their goal is to enhance the readability and professionalism of the final product.

What is the difference between Copy Editor vs Proofreader?

Job description

WHO WE ARE

LoadUp is a fast-growing company that provides a transparent and convenient solution to on-demand home services through our custom tech-enabled order management and logistics platform. We match both individuals and businesses with our network of service providers for sustainable removal, disposal, assembly, and hourly labor services, nationwide.

We are looking for talented, committed, driven individuals to join our team! LoadUp is among Inc.’s list of the 5000 Fastest-Growing companies and is a certified Great Place to Work® six years in a row (2019 - 2025).

OUR CORE BELIEFS

At LoadUp, we exist to glorify God by pursuing excellence in all we do. Our definition of excellence is not perfection but rather a commitment to continual improvement, attention to detail, and the highest level of integrity. While each team member has a specific, clearly defined role, we’re all connected by a strong set of core beliefs:

  • Profit Drives Purpose – We believe running a profitable business allows us to fulfill our professional and personal purpose in life.

  • Right Shell – We constantly need to be evaluating whether our processes, systems, and people are right-sized for maximum agility.

  • Own It – Everyone has a stake in the company and, therefore, is responsible for their performance.

  • Fellowship Matters – We believe there is power and connection in being present in the same physical space.

  • Live in Truth – We’re committed to winning the right way. Call it like it is. No sugar coating.

  • Action Over Words – Words are important, but 1000 words get trumped by 1 intentional action.

  • Build to Last – We’re building this company to last and withstand the test of time.

ABOUT THE ROLE

We are building a content engine that publishes at scale, and we need an AI Content Editor to run it. This is not a traditional writing role. You will take AI-generated drafts from "good" to "great," directing the technology to ensure every piece of content drives organic traffic and leads. If you are fluent in AI tools, obsessive about SEO/AEO quality, and motivated by watching rankings climb, this role was built for you.

WHAT YOU’LL DO

  • AI Orchestration: Operate AirOps daily to generate drafts for service pages, city guides, and blogs, refining prompts to match LoadUp's unique voice.

  • High-Volume Publishing: Maintain a consistent weekly cadence of optimized pieces, moving from draft to WordPress publication with speed.

  • SEO/AEO Excellence: Edit drafts for accuracy and tone while ensuring every piece is structured for modern search and Answer Engine Optimization (AEO).

  • Local Market Scaling: Build out city-level pages for junk removal, furniture assembly, and moving labor across our nationwide markets.

  • Content Optimization: Execute optimizations on older blog posts to improve structure, update internal links, and push rankings higher.

  • Performance Monitoring: Track impressions, clicks, and ranking movement in Google Search Console, flagging opportunities for CTR growth and topical coverage.

WHAT YOU BRING

  • Experience: 2–4 years in a content, SEO, or digital marketing role with a heavy focus on publishing.

  • AI Fluency: Hands-on experience using tools like Claude, ChatGPT, AirOps, or Jasper to produce high-quality content at scale.

  • Search Instincts: A solid understanding of on-page SEO, heading structures, internal linking, and search intent alignment.

  • Editorial Eye: Strong instincts that allow you to take an AI draft that is 70% there and make it 100% without a total rewrite.

  • Autonomy: Ability to work from keyword briefs and calendars with minimal direction.

WHO YOU ARE

  • An Efficiency Expert who values "Action Over Words" and loves finding ways to produce more without sacrificing quality.

  • A "Get It Done" Editor who is energized by watching content climb the search rankings.

  • A Systems Thinker who views AI as a creative partner rather than a shortcut.

WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT

  • Competitive Compensation – Rewards for results and organic traffic contribution.

  • Health & Wellness – Medical, Dental, Vision, and Life Insurance Benefits.

  • Financial Future – 401(k) with a 5% company match and FSA/HSA options.

  • The "LoadUp Extras" – Employee Stipend Program, Recognition Program, and Referral Rewards.

LoadUp is an equal-opportunity employer and values diversity in the workplace. We encourage all qualified individuals to apply.
