How much do copy cataloging jobs pay per year?
What are the typical daily responsibilities of someone working in copy cataloging?
Professionals in Copy Cataloging are primarily responsible for reviewing and editing bibliographic records, ensuring that library materials are accurately described and accessible in the catalog. This often involves using established templates or existing records as a basis, while making necessary adjustments to meet local and national cataloging standards. Daily work includes collaborating with acquisitions staff, handling various formats (such as books, media, or digital resources), and occasionally troubleshooting cataloging discrepancies. You may also be called upon to assist with special projects or collection maintenance, providing valuable support to librarians and library users.
What is copy cataloging?
A Copy Cataloging job involves processing and organizing bibliographic records for library materials using existing cataloging data. Copy catalogers verify, edit, and enhance records to ensure accuracy and consistency with library standards such as MARC and RDA. They typically retrieve cataloging information from databases like OCLC and adapt it to fit the institution’s classification system. This role helps maintain efficient access to library collections by ensuring materials are properly described and searchable.
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in copy cataloging, and why are they important?
To thrive in Copy Cataloging, you need a solid understanding of bibliographic standards, metadata creation, and library classification systems, often supported by a degree in library science or relevant certification. Familiarity with Integrated Library Systems (ILS), MARC records, OCLC WorldCat, and cataloging tools like RDA Toolkit is typically required. Attention to detail, organizational skills, and effective communication help individuals excel when managing records and collaborating with other library staff. These abilities ensure accurate catalog entries, efficient resource discovery, and seamless library operations.
