How much do copper engineer jobs pay per year?

As of May 30, 2026, the average yearly pay for copper engineer in the United States is $75,869.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $43,000.00 and $101,500.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Copper Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Copper Engineer, you need strong knowledge of copper cabling systems, telecommunications infrastructure, and relevant industry standards, often supported by technical certifications or an associate degree in electronics or telecommunications. Familiarity with tools such as OTDR testers, TDR meters, and network management systems is commonly required. Excellent problem-solving, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills for coordinating with teams and resolving technical issues on-site. These skills ensure reliable network installations, minimize downtime, and maintain high-quality service for clients.

What are the most common challenges faced by Copper Engineers in maintaining legacy copper networks?

Copper Engineers often encounter challenges such as diagnosing and repairing faults in aging infrastructure, dealing with signal interference, and ensuring network reliability despite physical degradation of copper lines. Additionally, as many organizations transition to fiber optics, Copper Engineers must frequently adapt to hybrid systems and integrate new technologies with existing copper networks. Staying updated on best practices for troubleshooting and maintenance is crucial for success in this evolving environment.

What are copper engineers?

Copper engineers are professionals who specialize in the installation, maintenance, and repair of copper-based telecommunication and electrical networks. Their work often involves laying copper cables, troubleshooting connectivity issues, and upgrading existing copper infrastructure to ensure reliable data and voice transmission. They may work for telecommunications companies, utilities, or construction firms, and need a strong understanding of electrical systems, network protocols, and safety standards.

What is the difference between Copper Engineer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectCopper EngineerElectrical Engineer
Primary FocusDesign and optimize copper wiring and componentsDesign and develop electrical systems and circuits
Required CredentialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering or related, certifications in wiring or materialsBachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Professional Engineer (PE) license often preferred
Work EnvironmentManufacturing plants, construction sites, labsOffices, labs, construction sites
Industry UsageElectronics manufacturing, wiring, cabling projectsPower systems, electronics, telecommunications

While Copper Engineers specialize in copper wiring and components, Electrical Engineers have a broader role in designing electrical systems across various industries. Both roles require electrical engineering credentials, but Copper Engineers focus more on materials and wiring specifics, often working closely with manufacturing and installation teams.

Job/Position Summary
The Copper Plating Engineer will develop, optimize, and support copper electroplating and electroless plating processes. This role is ideal for an engineer who enjoys working directly with tools and chemistries, running experiments, solving problems quickly, and contributing across R&D and early manufacturing environments.
Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop and optimize ABF and DFR lamination processes for advanced packaging applications.
  • Run experiments to improve lamination quality, adhesion, and yield.
  • Support DFR exposure and development processes and chemistry control.
  • Troubleshoot adhesion loss, voiding, wrinkling, delamination, warpage, and defectivity.
  • Develop and maintain ABF/DFR adhesion to glass and copper surfaces.
  • Support ABF laser structuring and via formation processes.
  • Set up, qualify, and maintain ABF/DFR lamination and exposure equipment.
  • Work closely with integration, laser, plating, and reliability teams.
  • Collect and analyze process data; apply DOE and root cause analysis to drive improvements.
  • Support scale-up from R&D to pilot and early manufacturing environments.
  • Perform additional functions and other duties as assigned or required.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related field required.
  • 2-5 years of experience in copper plating or advanced packaging process engineering.
  • Panel-level plating experience is desired.
  • An advanced packaging or heterogeneous integration background is desired.
  • Willing to relocate to Albuquerque, New Mexico, for 1-2 years and willing to relocate to India for 2 years or permanently.
  • This position will require lawful access to ITAR/EAR controlled information, and employees in these roles will need to meet those requirements. Requirements include US Citizenship, US Permanent Resident, or the ability to meet contract-specific licensure requirements.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Strong experimental skills and data-driven problem-solving approach.
  • Comfortable working in a startup environment with evolving requirements.
  • Ability to work independently and across disciplines.
  • Strong experimental design and data analysis skills.
  • Proven track record of solving complex plating and integration challenges.
  • Hands-on experience with copper electroplating chemistries
  • Familiarity with plating chemistry additives (suppressors, accelerators, levelers)
  • Experience using electroplating waveforms (DC, pulse, pulse-reverse)
  • Understanding of electroless copper plating and copper seed layer formation
  • Experience with plating tools and wet benches
  • Knowledge of defect mechanisms and process control in copper plating
  • Excellent communication and mentoring skills.
  • Experience scaling processes from R&D to pilot or production is desired.
  • Familiarity with SPC, FMEA, and yield analysis and methodologies is desired.

Physical/Working Requirements
