What is a Copilot Developer?

A Copilot Developer is a software professional who specializes in integrating, customizing, or developing solutions using AI-powered coding assistants, such as GitHub Copilot. Their role often includes enhancing developer workflows by leveraging these AI tools, contributing to codebases, and ensuring that AI-generated code meets quality and security standards. They may also provide feedback to improve Copilot's suggestions and help teams adopt AI-assisted development practices. Copilot Developers often have strong programming skills and a deep understanding of how to effectively collaborate with AI tools.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Copilot Developer?

To thrive as a Copilot Developer, a strong background in software engineering, proficiency in languages such as Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript, and experience with AI/ML concepts are essential, often supported by a relevant degree. Familiarity with GitHub Copilot, code editors like Visual Studio Code, and cloud platforms such as Azure or AWS is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, effective communication, and a collaborative mindset help developers integrate AI tools into workflows and assist end-users. These skills ensure efficient, innovative solutions and maximize the impact of AI-powered code assistance in software development environments.

What are some common challenges Copilot Developers face when integrating AI-powered coding assistants into existing development workflows?

Copilot Developers often encounter challenges such as ensuring seamless integration of AI-assisted coding tools with a variety of development environments and version control systems. They must address concerns around code quality, security, and maintaining team coding standards, as AI-generated suggestions may not always align with best practices. Additionally, developers need to foster collaboration and trust within teams, encouraging effective use of Copilot without diminishing peer code reviews or knowledge sharing. Successful Copilot Developers proactively gather feedback from users and iterate on integration strategies to optimize productivity and code reliability.

Job description

Corporate Technology

Michael Baker International understands that people require choices in where they want to build a sustainable future. For more than 85 years, Michael Baker International has maintained an entrepreneurial work environment that fosters great careers and brings great success to the organization. Michael Baker offers many opportunities to grow professionally - whether in Finance, IT, Human Resources, Technology, Communications, or our National Practice and Market segments. Take your next step with us and help make a difference in the lives of those you work with and those we serve.

What We're Looking For

Michael Baker International is seeking a Senior Microsoft AI Developer to join our CTO organization in a fully remote capacity. In this role, you will design and deliver enterprise-grade AI-capable applications and Copilot Studio agents that enable the organization to scale intelligent solutions across the Microsoft ecosystem. You will partner closely with IT, Data & AI, Cybersecurity, Legal, and business stakeholders to build, govern, and continuously improve AI-powered solutions - driving meaningful adoption and measurable business impact.

This is a development-focused role. You will own the engineering and delivery of AI solutions built on Microsoft Copilot Studio, Azure AI Foundry, and the Microsoft Power Platform, working alongside a dedicated Power Platform Administrator who owns tenant governance and the Center of Excellence (CoE) Toolkit.

This is a fully remote position supporting the United States. Michael Baker International does not sponsor employment visas for this position.

What You'll Do

  • Design, build, and maintain Copilot Studio agents - including topics, actions, tools, orchestration, connectors, and knowledge grounding - integrated with enterprise data sources, Microsoft 365, and line-of-business systems
  • Implement retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) patterns against enterprise content in SharePoint, Dataverse, and other MBI systems to keep agent responses accurate and traceable
  • Develop and deploy generative AI solutions on Azure AI Foundry and Azure OpenAI, including model selection, prompt engineering, and systematic output evaluation
  • Build and consume Azure AI and Azure OpenAI APIs in Python to extend Copilot Studio agents and custom applications beyond out-of-the-box platform capabilities
  • Develop supporting Power Apps and Power Automate flows where they are the right delivery vehicle for an AI-enabled use case
  • Implement responsible AI practices - including input validation, prompt injection defense, and security guardrails - as first-class engineering requirements
  • Partner with Data & AI teams to align solutions with the organization's broader GenAI and Azure AI strategy
  • Support proof-of-concepts (PoCs), pilots, MVPs, and production deployments of AI-capable applications; document architectural patterns and manage solution assets in source control
  • Provide technical guidance, training, and enablement to makers, developers, and business stakeholders building AI solutions
  • Promote engineering best practices including source control discipline, automated build and release pipelines, and solution performance and maintainability standards
  • Track usage and impact of deployed agents and AI solutions; use insights to drive continuous improvement

What You Need to Succeed

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent experience
  • 7+ years of experience with Microsoft technologies, including hands-on application development
  • Demonstrated experience building and deploying Copilot Studio agents in an enterprise environment
  • Strong experience developing solutions using Azure AI Foundry, Azure OpenAI, and the Microsoft Power Platform (Power Apps, Power Automate, Dataverse)
  • Proficiency in Python for developing, integrating, and automating AI solutions and services
  • Demonstrated experience with source control and modern deployment practices including Git, branching strategies, and CI/CD pipelines
  • Working knowledge of prompt engineering, RAG patterns, grounding, and evaluation of generative AI output
  • Experience integrating solutions with Microsoft 365, Azure services, and external APIs
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts for non-technical stakeholders

Nice to Have

  • Experience with Azure AI Foundry model catalog, Azure Fabric (including Databricks), or enterprise GenAI platforms
  • Experience with Power Platform extensibility - custom connectors, Azure Functions, REST APIs
  • Background supporting large-scale citizen developer or maker programs
  • Microsoft certifications (Azure AI Engineer Associate, Power Platform Developer Associate, or related)
  • Familiarity with responsible AI frameworks, AI governance standards, or AI security practices
  • AEC (Architecture, Engineering, and Construction) industry exposure

Compensation

The approximate compensation range for this position is $120,179 to $170,000. This compensation range is a good faith estimate for the position at the time of posting. Actual compensation is dependent upon factors such as education, qualifications, experience, skillset, and physical work location.

Why Choose Us

  • Medical, dental, vision insurance
  • 401(k) Retirement Plan
  • Health Savings Account (HSA)
  • Flexible Spending Account (FSA)
  • Life, AD&D, short-term, and long-term disability
  • Professional and personal development
  • Generous paid time off
  • Commuter and wellness benefits
