Job description

ICON is looking for a Manager of Mechanical Engineering to lead the mechanical engineering group in the Titan Program. As a Manager of Mechanical Engineering at ICON, you will be responsible for the quality of work and outputs by those in your mechanical engineering group. This role is based at ICON's Austin, TX campus.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Hire, manage and coach individuals within the Mechanical Engineering function.Escalate potential and actual technical issues to the PM and Management that may impact safety, Business Goals, Requirements, Schedule, Budget, or Scope.

  • Ensure the quality of work produced is sufficient to meet Product Goals and Requirements. 

  • Consult with Subsystem owners to help prioritize complex issues.

  • Assign individual engineers to Subsystems projects and work with sub-system owners to manage their workload.

  • Work with the team on professional growth opportunities.

  • Represent mechanical engineering as a Strategic Stakeholder

  • Drive innovative design directions while balancing risks to projects.

  • Establish and enforce quality assurance processes to maintain high standards of product integrity and reliability throughout development phases.

  • Champion innovation and research initiatives to explore emerging technologies and trends.

  • Serve as a liaison between engineering teams and other departments to facilitate effective communication and alignment on technical matters.

  • Facilitate interdisciplinary collaboration and knowledge-sharing to promote a holistic approach to problem-solving and innovation within the team

  • Define how work within this discipline should be completed and to which standards (i.e. "how work must be done").

  • Define and encourage the adoption of guiding design principles and best practices (i.e. "how work should be done").

  • Operate as SME where applicable in design and development efforts.

  • Mentor fellow engineers and foster a strong culture of mentorship and continuous personal and professional improvement.

  • Operate as an Individual Contributor when necessary for project delivery

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering or related field.

  • 5+ years of professional work experience as a Mechanical Engineer.

  • Experience managing or leading technical teams.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of component manufacturing processes (including machining, rapid prototyping, etc.)

  • Demonstrated experience leading large system development projects.

  • Proficiency in using parametric solid modeling and CAD software to design and document parts and assemblies.

  • SolidWorks and PDM experience are required.

  • Familiarity with making drawings and applicable drawing and tolerancing standards.

  • Exceptional technical and problem-solving skills and reasoning ability.

  • Adept at communicating in a collaborative team environment and seeking optimum solutions with other team members.

  • Knowledge of the AGILE SCRUM methodology of project management.

  • A service-oriented attitude when in a support role.

  • Ability to prioritize and stay cool in a dynamic start-up environment.

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE

  • Previous automation industry experience.

  • Previous start-up experience, and/or a resourceful innovative nature with an ability to streamline or develop efficient processes.

  • Professional experience with thermal and mechanical FEA, and topological optimization. Ansys or Solidworks simulation.

  • Ability to read and understand electrical schematics, and the ability to troubleshoot electrical and mechanical systems.

  • Industrial safety system experience.

  • A hunger for learning and personal growth.
