Job Summary

The work of a Baggage System Operator (BSO) classification, depending on assignment, includes any or all the following: entering the baggage system to free baggage jams maintain the cleanliness of the immediate work area and bag room as required. BSO are responsible for the operation of the belt system.  Must ensure proper spacing of bags and monitor the buildup of bags on the carousels. Must ensure that the bags are aligned as required and/or immediately clear any resulting jams.  BSOs are responsible for the manual movement of baggage in the event of a system outage.  The BSOs will be responsible for providing customer service while directing, handling passenger baggage, and ensuring that customer baggage is directed to the appropriate locations from stations in the Airport bag room.

Responsibilities
  • Check baggage into the system when received from interline or other input point of a baggage system which entails determining baggage destination and placement of a bar coded tag on the baggage
  • Ensures that baggage transport tubs are used and cleaned of previous bar-coded tags
  • Gathering of baggage transport tubs from distribution points and return to input points
  • May also be required to act as a general utility/support type person on maintenance contracts, which may include parts or supplies runner.
Minimum Requirements
  • HS Diploma, GED or Equivalent.
  • Ability to judge distance.
  • Valid driver's license
  • Must be able to work a flexible schedule for a 24/7 operation including nights, weekends, and/or holidays
  • Background check and drug screen required
  • Must be able to attain and sustain an Airport I.D. Badge

  • General technical knowledge of conveyor systems.
  • Flexibility with time, able to shift priorities quickly based on staff and system needs
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills  
  • Strong work ethic and initiative, who would like to grow and develop within the organization.
  • Customer and service oriented
Physical Requirements/Working Conditions
  • Must be able to stand; walk, use hands to handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. May be required to climb, stoop, kneel, crouch and/or crawl.
  • Must be able to climb ladders up to 10 feet in height.
  • Pull, push, and lift bags weighing up to 70 lbs. onto or from a conveyor belt.
  • Driving vehicles in areas congested with aircraft, moving and stationary vehicles and equipment, and have the ability to distinguish colors, red, yellow and green.
  • Must be able to perform the above functions in variable weather conditions, as well as environmental conditions, i.e., jet engine fumes, vehicle emissions, jet engine noise and dust.
