What is a controls systems engineer?

Control Systems Engineers are professionals who design, develop, and maintain systems that manage, regulate, and automate processes in industries such as manufacturing, power generation, and transportation. They use principles of engineering, mathematics, and computer science to ensure that machines and processes operate efficiently, safely, and reliably. Their work often involves programming controllers, designing feedback loops, and integrating sensors and actuators to optimize system performance.

What are some common challenges a controls systems engineer faces when working on multidisciplinary projects?

Controls Systems Engineers frequently collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams, which can pose coordination challenges due to differing design methodologies and project timelines. Ensuring seamless integration of control systems with various hardware and software components often requires effective communication and adaptability. Additionally, troubleshooting issues that arise during commissioning or operation—often under tight deadlines—demands strong problem-solving skills and a thorough understanding of both the control systems and the larger system architecture.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a controls systems engineer?

To thrive as a Controls Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in electrical engineering, automation, and process control, typically with a bachelor’s degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with PLC programming, SCADA systems, HMI software, and relevant certifications like Certified Automation Professional (CAP) are highly valued. Strong problem-solving, analytical thinking, and communication skills help you work effectively with cross-functional teams and troubleshoot complex systems. These skills are vital for designing, implementing, and maintaining reliable automation solutions that optimize safety and efficiency in industrial environments.

Job Title: Controls Engineer

Job Description

This role focuses on designing and developing advanced building automation and energy management control systems using Ignition within commercial, industrial, and data center environments. The Controls Engineer will create modern SCADA/HMI interfaces for HVAC and Building Management Systems, develop scalable system architectures, and configure backend infrastructure in a distributed controls environment. The position is hands-on and involves close collaboration with engineering teams to deliver reliable, user-friendly, and standardized control solutions that support energy performance monitoring and operational efficiency.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop Ignition-based SCADA and HMI systems for Building Management Systems and Energy Management Platforms.
  • Build and configure custom dashboards, graphics, and user interfaces for HVAC equipment and facility operations to ensure intuitive operator experiences.
  • Develop system architecture, including tag structures, alarming strategies, trending configurations, and navigation layouts for scalable control platforms.
  • Configure and manage Ignition gateways, projects, and modules to support distributed control environments.
  • Set up and maintain network communication between field devices, controllers, and servers to ensure reliable data flow and system performance.
  • Integrate control systems with PLCs and industrial communication protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Support data collection, visualization, and reporting for energy usage and overall system performance.
  • Collaborate with internal engineering teams on system design, deployment, and troubleshooting activities throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Assist in remote commissioning and system validation to confirm proper functionality and performance of control systems.
  • Ensure that all control solutions are scalable, standardized, and user-friendly for operators and facility personnel.
  • Travel to data centers and other facilities as needed to support system implementation, commissioning, and maintenance.

Essential Skills

  • Hands-on experience in controls engineering within building automation, energy management, or related environments.
  • Proficiency with Ignition for developing SCADA and HMI applications, including dashboards, graphics, and user interfaces.
  • Experience with PLC programming and PLC troubleshooting in industrial or commercial control systems.
  • Ability to design and implement tag structures, alarms, trends, and navigation layouts for control system architectures.
  • Experience configuring and managing Ignition gateways, projects, and modules.
  • Knowledge of integrating control systems with PLCs and industrial protocols such as BACnet and Modbus.
  • Strong understanding of network communication between field devices, controllers, and servers.
  • Ability to support data collection, visualization, and reporting for energy usage and system performance.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills in distributed controls environments.
  • Willingness and ability to travel to data centers as part of a traveling role.

Work Environment

The role operates within an engineering-driven environment focused on advanced building automation, energy management, and data center facilities. The Controls Engineer will work with Ignition-based SCADA and HMI platforms, PLCs, industrial communication protocols such as BACnet and Modbus, and networked control infrastructure connecting field devices, controllers, and servers. The position involves a combination of office-based engineering work and field-based activities, including travel to data centers and other commercial or industrial facilities for system deployment, commissioning, and support. The work environment emphasizes collaboration with internal engineering teams, hands-on system development, and a strong focus on reliable, scalable, and operator-friendly control solutions.
