Position Summary

The CNC Technician is responsible for installing, troubleshooting, repairing, calibrating, and maintaining Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machinery and related industrial equipment. The primary objective of this position is to maximize machine reliability, minimize production downtime, maintain equipment accuracy, and support a safe and efficient manufacturing environment.

The technician performs emergency, corrective, and preventive maintenance on multi-axis CNC lathes, mills, grinders, robotic systems, and auxiliary equipment. This role requires strong mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and controls knowledge, along with the ability to interpret complex schematics and diagnose equipment faults.

Core Responsibilities
  • Troubleshooting: Diagnose mechanical, electrical, electronic, hydraulic, pneumatic, and CNC control faults using schematics, diagnostic tools, alarms, and machine data. Mazak, Okuma, Haas and Mori Seiki.
  • Repairs: Repair, rebuild, adjust, or replace components such as ball screws, linear guides, spindle assemblies and bearings, motors, encoders, gears, pumps, valves, sensors, and related machine components.
  • Preventive Maintenance: Perform scheduled preventive and predictive maintenance, including lubrication, fluid and filter changes, cleaning, inspections, alignment checks, calibration, geometry adjustments, and condition monitoring.
  • Electrical & Automation: Troubleshoot and service servo drives, variable frequency drives (VFDs), PLCs, transformers, relays, contactors, HMIs, power supplies, motors, and input/output devices.
  • CNC Controls: Navigate, diagnose, and make approved adjustments to major machine control platforms such as FANUC, Siemens, Mitsubishi, and Allen-Bradley.
  • Machine Accuracy: Support machine leveling, axis alignment, backlash checks, spindle alignment, laser calibration, and other activities required to maintain machining accuracy and repeatability.
  • Installation & Commissioning: Assist with machine installation, relocation, startup, commissioning, utility connections, and verification of safe operation.
  • Documentation: Record maintenance activities, work orders, failure information, parts usage, calibrations, and completed preventive maintenance in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Continuous Improvement: Identify recurring equipment failures and recommend corrective actions, reliability improvements, spare-parts needs, and maintenance process improvements.
  • Safety: Follow all company safety procedures, Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) requirements, OSHA regulations, electrical safety practices, and PPE requirements.
Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Technical school, trade certification, apprenticeship, or Associate degree in Industrial Maintenance, Mechatronics, Electronics, Electrical Technology, or a related field is preferred.
  • Typically 3-5 years of hands-on industrial maintenance experience, preferably in a CNC machining or high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot CNC equipment using electrical schematics, mechanical drawings, hydraulic diagrams, pneumatic diagrams, and OEM documentation.
  • Working knowledge of CNC controls, PLCs, servo systems, VFDs, industrial electrical systems, hydraulics, pneumatics, bearings, gearboxes, and precision mechanical systems.
  • Proficiency with hand tools, power tools, multimeters, clamp meters, calipers, micrometers, indicators, and other diagnostic or precision measuring equipment.
  • Ability to use diagnostic software, maintenance documentation, and CMMS applications.
  • Strong problem-solving, communication, and organizational skills, with the ability to work independently and coordinate with production, engineering, and maintenance teams.
Preferred Skills
  • Experience with FANUC, Siemens, Mitsubishi, and/or Allen-Bradley controls.
  • Experience with multi-axis CNC lathes, machining centers, grinders, robotic cells, and automated material-handling equipment.
  • Experience with laser alignment, ball-bar testing, machine geometry, spindle troubleshooting, and precision calibration.
  • Knowledge of root cause analysis and reliability-centered maintenance practices.
Physical & Work Requirements
  • Ability to lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb, reach, and work in confined or restricted areas around industrial machinery for extended periods.
  • Ability to work safely around moving equipment, electrical systems, oils, coolants, compressed air, and other typical manufacturing hazards.
  • Ability to respond to equipment breakdowns and production priorities; overtime, weekends, or off-shift work may be required based on operational needs.
  • Must be able to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE).
Performance Expectations

Success in this role is measured by equipment uptime, quality and timeliness of repairs, preventive maintenance completion, reduction of repeat failures, accurate documentation, machine reliability, and consistent adherence to safety standards.
