Job description

HVAC Senior Controls Technician

Johnson Controls helps create smart, healthy, and sustainable buildings. In this role, you will support customers with building automation service work that improves comfort, reliability, and operating efficiency.

If you are a hands-on controls professional who enjoys solving complex issues in the field, this is a chance to work directly with customers and make a visible impact.

Role Overview

Under minimal supervision, you will perform preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning, and general servicing of building controls systems. You will act as a trusted advisor to customers, resolve service-related issues, and help identify opportunities to improve building performance. This role also includes mentoring other technicians, supporting project closeout, and contributing to system configuration, programming, and documentation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform preventive maintenance, repair, installation, commissioning, and general servicing of HVAC and building automation control systems.
  • Diagnose and resolve complex control system malfunctions using detailed troubleshooting across electronic and digital control systems.
  • Program and configure control systems and devices, including PLCs, DDC controllers, and variable frequency drives.
  • Support field proposals for retrofits, upgrades, and enhancements, and provide technical recommendations to support sales opportunities.
  • Consult with customers through site assessments, gather data, and recommend solutions that improve efficiency and resolve service issues.
  • Coordinate with branch leadership, service project managers, customers, and subcontractors to keep work moving efficiently and professionally.
  • Prepare sketches, as-built information, drawings, equipment schedules, sequence of operations, and other project documentation as required.
  • Train customers on control system operation and provide manuals, certificates, training forms, and closeout documentation.
  • Mentor control technicians, service technicians, and mechanical technicians on building automation activities and safe work practices.
  • Support system loading, commissioning, validation, and troubleshooting for controllers, software, and network-level components.

How You Will Do It

  • Take ownership of outcomes with accountability, safety, and integrity by completing assigned work carefully, escalating issues early, and following Johnson Controls and customer standards on every site.
  • Stay close to the work and the customer by gathering clear site data, communicating on arrival and before leaving, and translating findings into practical service recommendations.
  • Improve every day through self-study, product knowledge, certifications, and disciplined problem-solving that reduces repeat issues and strengthens system performance.
  • Win as one team by keeping management, project partners, subcontractors, and customers informed, and by sharing knowledge with technicians you mentor.
  • Use tools and documentation with precision by applying multimeters, laptops, and specialized software to test systems, verify functionality, and complete accurate project records.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally by explaining technical issues in plain language, setting expectations, and following through on agreed next steps and training needs.
Qualifications
  • Vocational School two-year program graduate, an Associate's degree in a technical field, or two years of experience servicing electronic and/or mechanical systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to install and/or service electronic control systems and HVAC equipment.
  • Proficiency in troubleshooting and repairing HVAC control systems, including interpreting electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and control sequences.
  • General computer and computer networking knowledge, including basic IT networking concepts for integrating control systems.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools such as multimeters, laptops, and specialized software for system analysis.
  • Effective communication skills to represent Johnson Controls on customer sites and explain technical information to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong writing skills and the ability to prioritize tasks, manage schedules, and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Knowledge of control theory, automatic temperature controls, building automation systems, and other building subsystems.
  • Willingness to stay current with new technologies, equipment, and industry standards.
Nice to Have
  • Experience programming or configuring PLCs, DDC controllers, and variable frequency drives.
  • Experience supporting retrofit, upgrade, or enhancement recommendations for building automation systems.
  • Experience preparing submittals, as-built documentation, field change information, or customer training materials.
  • Experience mentoring junior technicians in a field service or controls environment.
Why Join Us

You will join a team focused on safe, reliable building performance and customer outcomes. This role offers hands-on variety across service, commissioning, training, and project support, with the opportunity to deepen your technical expertise and share it with others.

If you are ready to help customers improve building performance, we encourage you to apply.
